The architectural glass and metal industry offers a number of AIA-registered courses which provide information on environmentally friendly construction. Following is information about some of these courses available from industry companies.

BIPV: Building Integrated Photovoltaics

This training program has been developed to provide a better understanding of the principles of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and the products available to make such integration possible. Applications for electricity generating building materials are discussed. Stand-alone and grid-connected photovoltaic applications are explored.

Improving Thermal Performance in Structural Windows

This course provides information about two industry-accepted systems—thermal barriers for extruded, aluminum framing and warm-edge spacer technology for insulating glass—for improving thermal performance and structural strength. Thermal barrier aluminum fenestration framing technology interrupts the transfer of heat and cold in window and glazing systems. The primary purpose of a thermal barrier is to improve overall performance by separating the outside environment from the inside, while maintaining the structural integrity of the window system. When the thermal performance of aluminum is improved, dramatic results in energy savings result.

Warm-edge technology for commercial insulating glass is designed to improve the overall U-factor and the condensation resistance factor (CRF) of the fenestration system. Warm-edge technology is compared to the most commonly used air-spacer material in terms of thermal and structural performance. As environmental performance, sustainable design, green awareness and more stringent building codes are introduced, every component of the fenestration system is being evaluated for performance improvements.

The Evolution of Glass and High-Performance Coatings

This seminar discusses glass as a basic material through the manufacturing process. It discusses the various types of low-E technologies available and defines relevant energy terms. The types of low-E and solar-control glazings is clarified. A case-study format is utilized to discuss current trends in glass usage and application. There also is a review of current glass and market trends as well as a discussion of important design considerations and ideas related to the use of glass in architecture.

Provides an overview of various architectural glass products, including clear and tinted float glass, reflective glass, low-emissivity glass and specialty glass products, such as profiled, textured, structural, fire-resistant, anti-reflective and self-cleaning glass.
