Windshield Replacement for the 2001 Ford Escape
Begin preparation for removing the windshield by protecting the interior seats and dash area. Then remove the rearview mirror—there are no wires attached—and protect the exterior fender areas.
Next, remove the wipers. They are held on with 15-mm nuts. Finally, remove the cowl panel. This windshield has a bonded, inverted molding. Be very careful around the vertical leg of the pinchweld, as the paint is easily damaged.
2. Removing the original windshield:
We recommend using the full-cut-out method. With a sharp chisel or utility knife, remove the adhesive. This should leave a thin skin of well-bonded urethane on the pinchweld. Be careful not to disturb the body paint. This windshield may be cut on all four sides with a power cut-out tool or a cold-knife.
3. Preparing for the new windshield:
Prime the pinchweld according to your adhesive manufacturer’s specifications. Concentrate only on those areas of the paint that may have been scratched or damaged during the removal process, as the freshly-cut urethane bed provides the best bonding surface. Allow proper time for the primers to cure. Clean and prime the windshield according to your adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations. Prep the new windshield, making sure you duplicate the original bead.
4. Placing the new windshield:
Dry-set the windshield into the opening, adjusting for proper alignment. The dry-set is necessary to ensure the glass fits in the original spot. Remove the windshield and set it on a cradle with the inboard lite in the upright position. Use a properly cut V-notch tip to duplicate the original bead size. Apply a high-viscosity, two-part adhesive to the glass. Make sure to follow the original pattern of the urethane, creating a bead OE- or 3/8-inch wide, whichever is wider. Set the windshield into the opening, using your dry-set marks for proper alignment. Be careful not to slide the windshield once it makes contact with the pinchweld.
5. Finishing touches:
Clean and prep the vehicle. Reverse the steps listed under section 1, then clean and detail the vehicle.
