AGRSS Rolls Out Credentialing Program; Becomes Effective October 1
The Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standards Council (AGRSS) has announced the inauguration of its credentialing program, which is designed to identify and recognize the companies that have agreed in writing to practice and adhere to the AGRSS standard. The credentialing program went into effect on October 1.
The new AGRSS credentialing program enables automotive glass replacement companies that agree to follow and continuously adhere to the new safety standard to become accredited by the Council. Once accredited, companies will be able to display AGRSS credentials and promote their adherence to the standards. A number of marketing programs and services are also planned for AGRSS-accredited companies.
“We will soon reach the day where consumers can look for an AGRSS accreditation logo at an auto glass shop in much the same way that they look for ASE logos at their body shops,” said Carl Tompkins, chairperson of the AGRSS credentialing committee and western states area manager for the Sika Corp. “Customers, including insurance companies, will be able to have a higher degree of confidence that auto glass is being replaced in accordance with safe replacement procedures.”
He continued, “This is a far-reaching program. Companies will be required to re-certify annually and we anticipate a validation component to be added to the program, in order to provide our industry’s customers ‘proof’ that proper installation procedures are being followed.”
Tompkins said the fact that AGRSS is accrediting companies means those involved with auto glass installation in that company will receive training and be expected to follow procedures defined within the standard.

Vitro and AFG Team to Produce Float Glass
Vitro Plan, a subsidiary of Vitro, will unite with AFG Industries, a subsidiary of the Japanese Asahi Glass Co., to supply float glass to markets in the United States, Mexico and Canada, according to Internet Securities Inc. Production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2003.
“Our association with AFG will require funds of approximately $90 million,” said Jose Domeme, general operations vice president for Vitro. “We expect to start restructuring works in the Mexicali plant during the second half of 2002 and the first quarter of 2003.”
Domene said that Vitro’s priority is to reduce its debts, currently at $1.57 billion, the report said.
DialMark Re-establishes Relationship with LYNX and PPG
DialMark, provider of business software for the auto glass industry, has re-established a relationship with PPG Industries and LYNX Services.
“Our staff has worked closely with LYNX Services since 1994 and has great respect for their high technical standards," said Duane Rogowshi, former EDI technical manager for GTS and current director of product development for DialMark. "I see nothing but good times ahead for the relationship."
PAG Trains Canadian Dealerships
Madison, Wis.-based Performance Achievement Group (PAG) is performing auto glass technician training on behalf of Carlite® by Visteon for automotive dealerships throughout Canada. The two-day session begins with four hours of classroom training, during which participants learn about the role glass plays as a structural component of a vehicle’s safety system. The remaining 12 hours involve lots of hands-on experience with approximately six installations during that time. All of the content is based on Carlite’s aftermarket installation procedures.
Glass Doctor Hits Fourth Year with Dwyer Group; Opens 100th Location
Waco, Texas-based Glass Doctor, which recently opened its 100th franchise, also celebrated its fourth anniversary as part of the Dwyer Group on July 28. Originally, the company was opened in 1962, but only had 24 locations when the Glass Doctor acquired it in 1998.
“The foundation of a good business was already in place when we looked at acquiring the company,” said Robert Tunmire, president. “Some of the key missing ingredients were a strong corporate staff to support sales and rapid growth and a professional marketing campaign to take the brand to the next level. We took the mechanics that we had perfected for other subsidiaries and tailored them for Glass Doctor to follow suit.”
Mainstreet Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Mainstreet Computers Inc. of Belleville, Mich., celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Sika Automotive Awarded for Quality
Sika Automotive of Madison Heights, Mich., has been presented the Quality Performance Achievement for 2001 from Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America Inc.
The award is presented to suppliers who meet or exceed Toyota’s target of defective parts per million for the year. Sika Automotive was recognized for parts and components out of the Grandview, Missouri facility and raw materials/bulk products from the Marion, Ohio faculty.
“The recognition by Toyota is especially rewarding, given the substantial commitment Sika has made to the automotive industry in recent years,” said Robert Myers, senior vice president of Sika Automotive. “Our investment into high quality personnel, facilities and manufacturing processes are achieving the results we targeted.”
Sika Automotive has been supplying acoustic, bonding and sealing products to Toyota since 1987. The parts and components are manufactured at the Grandview facility and bulk material is produced in Marion.
