Safety at Its Origins

AGRSS Founder Signs His Shop Up

Carl Jolliff, owner of Jolliff Glass Co. in Peoria, Ill., has a distinct connection to AGRSS. He’s not just a charter registrant, but many refer to him as the father of the standard itself. Jolliff names a variety of reasons safety has become so important to him over the last 20 years:

     “1. We certainly do not want to have any of our employees or customers injured for any reason;

       2. We wish to keep our workers’ compensation claims and  garage-keepers’ liability costs as low as possible;

       3. We want the reputation of our company to remain unquestionable; and

       4. We chose to employ Performance Achievement Group in 1997 to train our entire company in the safe method of auto glass installation. At the conclusion of this training, we realized the need for safety for the entire auto glass industry, and for generations to come, especially since both of my sons Ron and Kevin will carry on in the business,” Jolliff said.
Jolliff has plans for incorporating the AGRSS registration throughout the operations of his business.

“We are attempting to educate the consumer on the value of safe auto glass installation,” he said. “We are introducing AGRSS in all of our printed material that goes to the media. We also wish to have a continuing education program in action for all of our
personnel.”

Jolliff, who is still a member of the AGRSS council and a former Independent Glass Association board president, hopes others will step up as quickly as the original 76 did.
“I most heartily would encourage all auto glass companies (worldwide) to register and begin implementing the AGRSS program in their companies,” Jolliff said.

Document It
Registrants Add Documentation to Their Methodologies
Paper work, paper work—it’s one of the number-one nuisances in most homes and businesses, and it’s no different in an auto glass shop. When asked how business is changing since registering with AGRSS, almost everyone interviewed said they were already doing everything the standard requires before registration, with the exception of all the documentation it requires.

Section 6 of AGRSS reads as follows:

“All adhesive system component lots numbers shall be traceable to each job.”

“All glass parts shall be traceable to the installation by a DOT number and part number.”

Scott Vold, president of Cracks & Racks in Carbondale, Colo., said documentation is the only thing he’s had to change since registering.

“All of the steps listed in actual installation section of the standard were already being done,” Vold said. “The only big change we had to make was recording DOT and lot numbers on our work orders, which was an easy change to our systems.”

Janet Parkhurst, owner/president of Oakes & Parkhurst Glass in Manchester, Maine, agreed.

“We have reviewed all the items to be sure that we are following them. The only thing we were not doing was recording the DOT number. We have made that change,” Parkhurst said.

Keith Atkinson, owner/operator for Glass by Image in Bozeman, Mont., echoed Vold and Parkhurst.

“Our company is recording all of the OEM date on our invoices,” Atkinson said. “We continue to educate our customers in the importance of OEM-approved materials and their proper applications.”

Safety Calls
Safety Pioneer Takes a Stand
Rusty Earles, owner of Earles Glass in Troy, Ala., took an interest in safety in the early 1980s when his children sent him an accidental wake-up call. Since, he has crusaded for the cause of safe auto glass installations and was one of the first to jump on board when AGRSS registration became available.

Earles started out in the auto body business, but had the company’s glass installer teach him the tools of the trade early on in his career. One day, his son was driving home from school in a pick-up truck Earles had bought him when he hit a pine tree, spun around in the road and the windshield popped out of the vehicle. The truck’s three occupants remained safe, but the incident hit Earles hard.

“I’d just installed the windshield myself. I’d heard a lot concerning safety, but it had gone in one ear and out the other,” he said.

As time went on, Earles said he began to hear more about safety and to pay attention to what he heard.

“I got involved in learning the correct procedures for installations. Then one night, about a year later, I was traveling down the road and I went around a curb and saw all kind of lights and it was obvious there was an accident there,” he said. “In the headlights of the rescue vehicle I could see that it was a Ford Aerostar van that had been crushed. My heart was in my throat because my sister drove the same kind of van. I walked up and saw a body covered with a sheet on top of a windshield.”

He continued, “I finally looked and realized it wasn’t my sister, but I still thought of the greatest fear you can imagine—that we had installed the windshield. Luckily, I checked and we hadn’t, but this gave me another wakeup call.”

Earles said after this safety became his top priority, and he is extremely grateful for the standard’s existence.

“Here in Alabama, there are absolutely no requirements placed upon anyone installing windshields—none whatsoever. You can get a pickup, buy some glass, drive up to someone and offer to install their windshield and they can say yes or no and never give any thought to safety,” Earles said. “Things happen more than people are willing to admit; the way the system operates, people don’t realize what is happening.”

To utilize the standard in his business, Earles is linking to the www.agrss.com website on
his own company website, www.earlesglass.com, and plans to add verbiage explaining why safety is so important to him when people first arrive at the site.

“Safe work is my passion. I’m not well-liked by some of my competitors, but it is my passion, and it is my intention to turn things around in Alabama,” he said.

Likewise, as it has been in the past, Earles plans to emphasize safety in all of his marketing efforts.

“All of my advertisements have always focused on safety. I never advertise price; I only stress safetey,” he said.

For those who haven’t registered with AGRSS, Earles hopes they will take the plunge soon too.

“We need to raise the standard and take the job and turn it into a profession, not something people question,” he said.
