Simply Quoteable

Every writer’s dream is to be quoted. Yet this dream rarely occurs. This time, though, I’m making it happen—I’m quoting myself. Last year around this time, in the January/February 2003 issue, I wrote, “In addition to the happiness that hopefully awaits us all personally this year, we also have a number of industry events to look forward to.” 

Well, at the time, I was referring to the National Windshield Repair Association Conference and Independent Glass Association’s national event, both of which were held in February. Little did I know all the other industry events—unexpected ones, to say the least—that the year would bring. And most of them have occurred in the last few short months.

Whispers were heard all around the recent National Auto Glass Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., about the fact that Harmon Autoglass had been sold. Well, fortunately for those of you who subscribe to our Glassbytes newsletter, you were among the first to know who is in negotiations to buy it—the Riverside Group, also in negotiations to buy the Waco, Texas-based Dwyer Group, the parent company of the Glass Doctor.

We’ve yet to gain further details as both companies are still at the stages where they’re not saying much, but by the time the January/February 2004 issue rolls around, we’ll have more details about the possible purchase and how it might affect you.

Also recently shocking the industry was news from industry giant Columbus, Ohio-based Safelite Glass Corp., whose long-time chief executive officer John Barlow has decided to suddenly retire, and Dan Wilson is taking over. This big change occurred just days before AGRR went into production—turn to page 40 for details. I just had the opportunity to meet John for the first time at the recent conference, and we here at AGRR wish him a happy retirement.

Finally, there’s the matter that’s always on all of our minds: pricing. NAGS is planning some big changes this year. In the last issue, you may have been a little shocked by our cover of the NAGS calculators burning within a dark, giant pit. Well, we may have been a little off. As it happens in mythology, Harry Potter and hopefully the next X-Men movie, the phoenix has risen. NAGS is back with—you guessed it—another Revaluation. Rumor has it that NAGS is working to separate part and labor pricing in the next calculator.
