Dow Automotive’s Bill Collins Retires
Bill Collins, a Dow Automotive Aftermarket representative in Michigan, recently announced that he would retire at the end of December following a 51-year career in the glass industry, including eight years representing Essex ARG/Dow Automotive Aftermarket.
Collins began his career in the glass industry with PPG in 1953 working in the auto glass department and advancing to manager of the Detroit depot. In 1961, he joined Ford’s glass division when it began its aftermarket business. Starting as a salesperson, he was promoted to regional sales manager, then promoted to Carlite sales manager, a position he held for nearly ten years.
He left Ford Glass to join Coolidge Glass Co. as manager of Michigan operations. In 1985, Collins started a manufacturers’ representative business selling Globe Amerada Glass. In 1995, he began representing Essex ARG/Dow Automotive.
Collins and his wife, Anne, reside in Plymouth, Mich.
Uttermohlen Leaves Safelite
Dee Uttermohlen, long-time spokesperson for Safelite Glass Corp., has left the company, according sources at the Columbus, Ohio-based company. Uttermohlen’s position has been filled by Bret Baird.
Her departure follows a series of changes at the company, including a change in command when chief executive officer John Barlow retired recently. Dan Wilson has taken over as chief executive officer of the company and led a recent restructuring (see November/December 2003 AGRR, page 44).
Austen Leaves Speedy Glass
Ron Austen, vice president of U.S. operations for Speedy Glass, has resigned, effective October 7. Austen, 48, had been with the company for 19 years.
Former Owner/President of Johnson Auto Glass Passes Away
Daisy Johnson Bourey, the former owner and president of Johnson Auto Glass in Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away on October 10. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon Jack Johnson. Bourey retired from the company in 1988.
