Trees and Trucks

You’ll notice something a little odd about this month’s issue, particularly the Price Points section on page 48. Instead of pricing a windshield replacement, I priced a backlite replacement. It was different, to say the least. I already had the story of how the break happened, and I think you’ll enjoy it. We around the office did. If you recognize this story, you just might be one of the shops mentioned in Price Points

I don’t know how much you know about the members of the AGRR staff, but personally, I find everyone and everything around me pretty much fair game. The co-worker, around whom this story revolves, knew well in advance that upon telling me the following story, it would probably end up in this 
magazine.

One day recently, as the seasons were just starting to change, this co-worker had an afternoon off work. She and her husband decided to do some yard work at their house, which included trying to take down an old tree in their yard that keeps losing limbs in each storm we have. As they’re cutting down the tree, they’re loading branches and tree parts into the bed of their brand new truck. I can say brand new, because it’s even newer than mine and was all of three months old at the time of the incident. 

Her husband is a big, strapping fellow who apparently doesn’t know his own strength, for, as his wife is turning to gather a new batch of debris, he throws a decent-sized branch into the back of their 2004 Dodge Ram 2500. And misses. It doesn’t land in the bed of the truck as planned. Instead, it breaks the backlite of the truck.

My co-worker, who has been in the industry for a considerable time longer than I have, told me she first sat down and laughed because the glass reacted “just like it was supposed to” and she was excited about it. Then she made some frantic calls: first to the office to get the phone number of the glass replacement company we use (the same one that I wrote about last month), next to said shop and then to her insurance company when she found out how much it would cost her out of pocket to replace the glass. Her husband didn’t believe the first price quoted and argued with her that the glass company was trying to rip them off. Obviously they weren’t, but he’s not familiar with our industry. And so this month’s Price Points was born.

Now, I hope not to make renegade Price Point subjects a habit, but we are rapidly approaching the holiday season and we may be seeing many a Christmas tree traveling down the roads; if those trees aren’t strapped down well—or if another husband out there doesn’t know his own strength—you, too, may be called upon to do an odd repair or replacement. If you are, please tell me about it. I’d love to hear some of the funnier or more bizarre stories about jobs you undertake.
