ANSI Accepts NAFS-1; Associations Consider Developing NAFS-2

The American National Stan-dards Institute (ANSI) has granted approval of the standard 101/IS. 2/NAFS-02 North American Fenestration Standard, Voluntary Performance Specifi-cation for Windows, Skylights and Glass Doors, as an American National Standard. 

The standard comes after four years of work by the Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA), American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and the Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA), along with input from the Canadian Standards Association members through the U.S. Canadian Fenestration Standards Harmonization Task Force.

“Though this version of the standard is not widely used in Canada, it does represent a significant step toward achieving seamless business across the U.S./Canadian border for fenestration industry manufacturers, which is expected to come with approval of the next version, and the ANSI-approval is a ringing endorsement that it’s a step in the right direction,” said AAMA chairman of the board of directors Chris Fuldner, also of EFCO.

The first version of the North American Fenestration Standard (formerly, before ANSI approval, often referred to as NAFS-1) combines the performance-based standards from ANSI/AAMA/NWWDA 101/I.S. 2 – 97, Voluntary Specification for Aluminum, Vinyl (PVC) and Wood Windows and Glass Doors, and the performance requirements from AAMA/WDMA 1600/I.S. 7, Voluntary Specification for Skylights. 

“Recognition of this new fenestration standard means that window, skylight and glass door manufacturers now have a single, ANSI-approved, voluntary specification document for their products,” said WDMA president Alan Campbell.

The associations have already begun preparing for the next edition of the standard, NAFS II, and the draft includes a side-hinged exterior door specification. It’s currently titled 101/I.S. 2/A440, Specification for the Performance of Windows, Doors and Unit Skylights.
The standard covers the Energy Star® criteria for windows, doors and skylights, and is available on the DOE’s website at www.doe.gov.

L.B. Plastics Celebrates Big 2-5
Mooresville, N.C.-based L.B. Plastics Inc. is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The company was formed in 1977 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the privately owned Litchfield Group, a worldwide leader of plastic technology in Derby, England. L.B. Plastics has since grown from a manufacturer of custom drawer systems for the furniture industry to a manufacturer of PVC plastic products for a number of industries.

“We began our operations in a 20,000-square-foot building,” said Harry H. Davis, president of the company and its first employee in 1977. “In 1987, we introduced the U.K.-designed Sheerframe® PVC window and door systems into the U.S. market. This was followed in 1990 by the introduction of maintenance-free PVC Sheerline® decking and railing products to meet the growing demand in the building 
industry …”

Freedonia Group Predicts Industry Growth
In its annual study on the industry, the Cleveland-based Freedonia Group reported that the U.S. window and door demand is expected to reach $31 billion in 2007. Strong growth in non-residential construction expenditures will support the gains, offsetting a weak outlook for the large residential market, according to the report, and increases in average home sizes and the growing uses of value-added products will work to offset the effects of the housing environment.

The report also says that plastic windows and doors will continue to lead demand gains through 2007, advancing 7.3 percent annually to $6.2 billion. However, despite the strong growth projected for plastic windows and doors, products made from metal and wood materials will continue to dominate dollar value demand through 2007.

MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS
Monarch Acquires American Weather-Seal
Orville, Ohio-based American Weather-Seal, a manufacturer of new construction and replacement premium vinyl windows and patio doors, was purchased recently by Monarch Manufacturing of Waukee, Iowa. The company has manufacturing facilities in Orrville and Winesburg, Ohio, and was owned previously by American Architectural Products Corp.

Monarch Manufacturing manufactures and markets windows and window accessories.
“The acquisition by Monarch provides American Weather-Seal with the resources to continue its aggressive sales growth and product and systems development as well as invest in the long-term future of the company,” said David Kruse, former president of American Weather-Seal.

Crystal Expands Chicago Plant
Crystal Windows & Doors Illinois Manufacturing, an affiliate of Flushing, N.Y.-based Crystal Windows & Doors, recently broke ground on a major expansion of its production facility in Chicago. The new 60,000-square-foot addition is scheduled for completion this fall and will adjoin directly to the company’s current 25,000-square-foot facility. The new addition is expected to cost $2.5 million and will allow the company to add four new window product lines to its current offerings, according to Crystal.

“This expansion allows Crystal to continue to grow and become a major Midwest window manufacturer,” said Ann Liang, founder and co-owner.
