Teknor Apex Reduces Temperature, Increases Throughput
Info+ www.teknorapex.com or call 401/725-8095
Teknor Apex of Pawtucket, R.I., has
introduced new Apex® flexible vinyl profile compounds, which feature processing temperatures of around 300 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to the 350 degrees Fahrenheit previous Apex profile extrusion products required. According to the company, this decrease in temperature enables extrusion processors to increase throughputs by 15 to 25 percent while maintaining close tolerances and achieving smooth, gel-free surfaces.
“Because cooler material is more viscous, it can pass through sizing equipment at higher speeds while maintaining target dimensions,” said Philip Morin, industry manager. “This improvement is particularly advantageous in the production of complex or thick-walled profiles, which are especially difficult to hold within tolerance when extruded ‘hot.’”
The new compounds are available in three series, each with grades spanning a range of durometers: Apex 2000-H clear formulations; Apex 2500-H compounds, which are lightly mineral filled; and moderately filled Apex 3000-H products.

AMSCO Windows of Salt Lake City has introduced the Renaissance series composite window, which combines the aesthetics of wood with the low maintenance qualities of vinyl.
According to the company, Renaissance composite windows are made with an alloy of four resins and wood fiber that will not warp, peel, rot or absorb water. The exterior of the composite window is an acrylic-based alloy with a medium gloss finish and is co-extruded, which makes it less likely to fade, chip or scratch off like paint.
“We believe that the Renaissance series composite windows will revolutionize the window industry,” said Steve Sullivan, director of marketing for AMSCO. “We expect that in a short period of time, composites will gain a market share in the industry that will be as significant as wood and vinyl because of its broad appeal and the solutions it offers to basic problems in the industry, not to mention the price point compared to wood.”
The company says the windows are priced approximately 10-15 percent less than wood windows. They are available in six colors: white, almond, taupe, sierra, bronze and evergreen. In addition, the manufacturing process allows AMSCO to create custom shapes and sizes with a one-week turnaround.

WARM-EDGE
Viracon Announces New Warm-Edge Technology
Info+ www.viracon.com or call 507/444-3490
Viracon of Owatonna, Minn., offers a stainless steel material technology option for warm-edge spacers.
“Applications in which the interior humidity requirements are higher than normal prove challenging for most glass specifiers when working with insulating glass units (IGUs),” said Rick Voelker, technical director. “Aluminum spacers have higher thermal conductivity that results in higher U-values at the edge of the glass. As a result, there is a potential for condensation formation in situations where higher interior relative humidity levels must be maintained.”
According to information from Viracon, the company uses spacers designed specially to incorporate the low thermal conductivity of stainless steel to overcome such a challenge.
“With the lower thermal conductivity of stainless steel, we maintain a lower edge-of-glass U-level,” added Brad Austin, senior vice president. “The lower the edge-of-glass U-value, the less likely you are to develop condensation.”
The company states that its stainless steel option is strong enough for large IGUs and structural glazing applications.
TEMPERATURE DETECTORS

signals that the temperature for a given location has never exceeded the trigger temperature.
Available in 40 different levels within the range of 40 to 260 degrees Celsius, Jumbo Celsi-Dot labels come in packages of 24 or rolls of 1200.
WINDOW SCREENS
West Nile Window Screen Available for Licensing or Sale
Info+ www.adventproduct.net or call 843/237-5915.
Vincent Pugh of Raleigh, N.C., has invented the West Nile window screen, which is now available through Advent Product Development for manufacturers for licensing and sale. The new screen kills insects and doubles as a fully functional screen. According to Advent Product Development in South Carolina, the screen is easy to install and prevents flies, mosquitoes and other winged insects from entering the house.
The specially designed window screen is wired to zap and kill insects electronically. It is compromised of a durable metal or wooden framework, which surrounds and contains a fine wire grid, or screen. The screen has increased voltage supplied by the transformer and applied to the two wire-mesh screens. The insect is vaporized on contact when it penetrates the space between the wire-mesh screens. It is similar to standard window screens, so it could be reproduced in varying shapes and sizes for use with various windows.
Pugh conceived the idea for the screen as a result of concerns with the West Nile Virus, which is spread by mosquitoes.
