Another Milestone in Fenestration Design
Doors Add to the Fold in a Big Way

Bringing all the elements of the building envelope’s fenestration together in an all-inclusive performance umbrella, recognized by both the United States and Canada, is becoming more of a reality. Windows, doors and skylights are all important parts of the quality solution and now, they are dictated by state-of-the-art performance standards. 

Side-hinged doors, both interior and exterior, have not been forgotten in the push to measure and establish performance criteria. In fact there’s a comprehensive effort under way to better measure the performance of doors and their importance to the building. Doors are being recognized for all they can do–such as provide fire-ratings, sound resistance, means of egress, weather barriers, security and beauty.

101/I.S. 2/A440 & Exterior Side-Hinged Doors
The 101/I.S. 2/NAFS-02, Speci-fication for Windows, Skylights and Glass Doors was the first harmonized fenestration standard with input, consensus and approval by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), WDMA and the Amer-ican Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA). The next version, 101/I.S. 2/A440 Specifications for Windows, Doors and Unit Skylights, includes new and critical performance criteria for exterior side-hinged doors. Now, with the inclusion of exterior side-hinged doors, the standard is one of the most comprehensive in the fenestration industry. 

As this issue was going to press, the latest version, 101/I.S. 2/A440, had been approved by both AAMA and WDMA, after three separate balloting processes and much work by the joint document management committee and many others in the industry. Plans are for the document to be included in the 2006 edition of the International Building Code and International Residential Code. There will also be another draft after the A440 technical committee meets to consider comments from the CSA public review of the document, but we’re certainly well on our way.

This is the first nationally recognized, performance-based, material neutral specification for exterior side-hinged door systems. 101/I.S. 2/A440 establishes minimum performance criteria, performance grades and performance class designations for exterior side-hinged door systems. Other key elements are allowances for limited water penetration designation, cycle testing performance and forced-entry resistance.

Architectural Wood Flush Doors
For interior architectural wood flush doors, another milestone has been reached. After almost three years of work by the I.S. 1A task group, the revised WDMA I.S. 

1A Industry Specification for Architectural Wood Flush Doors is now complete. After two separate balloting processes, the document has received association approval and after editorial revisions are completed, the printed document will be available to the industry. With this standard, performance duty levels and values are now part of specifying an architectural or commercial wood door. Eight performance attributes classify a door and its construction into the various duty levels. (See full column at www.doorandwindowmaker.com for the various levels). 

Aesthetics focus on appearance of faces and edges (veneers and finishes). I.S. 1A will stand alongside 101/I.S.2/A440, providing a compendium of specifications for architectural interior and exterior openings. 
The next step is for the I.S. 1A task group and the exterior fenestration standards committee 
to work with the Hallmark Certification committee to develop a new certification program for both exterior side-hinged doors and interior architectural wood flush doors. These additions to the existing WDMA Hallmark Certification Program will enable the users of those door products to evaluate and select the right door for their needs confidently, based upon independent third-party testing. The ultimate goal of all WDMA standards and certification work is to provide the end-user with good products that can be evaluated according to certain uniform measures.
