AAMA Adopts Stricter Standards to
Ensure Lead-Free Vinyl Profiles
The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) has approved revamped testing procedures recently, designed to ensure that vinyl window profiles used by AAMA-certified window and door producers are lead-free. It went into effect January 1, 2005, according to Dean Lewis, AAMA’s manager of product certification.
The procedure changes apply to both domestic and offshore extruders of vinyl profiles, as well as AAMA-accredited testing laboratories and licensees of the AAMA certification program.
“One sample of each profile design and color found in a plant must be tested for lead content during the AAMA inspections, which take place twice a year,” said Lewis. Additionally, a lead-check test by an AAMA-accredited laboratory will be conducted whenever they test a window, door or skylight assembly, he added.
There is also a requirement for new licensees to complete a 12-month weathering test, which is six months longer than what was required prior to July 1, 2004. Lewis noted that an exception existed for U.S. and Canadian profile producers who have applied for admission before January 1, 2005.
Licensed extruders who do not follow the new procedures can be fined up to $250,000 and will be de-listed from the program, according to AAMA.
GANA IG Division Endorses ASTM Standards
The Glass Association of North America’s (GANA) insulating glass (IG) division has voted to endorse the use of ASTM E 2188-02, Standard Test Method for Insulating Glass Unit Performance and ASTM E 2190-02, Standard Specification for Insulating Glass Unit Performance and Evaluation. The group is also encouraging that these standards be allowed to supersede previously recognized standards.
“We believe the new ASTM insulating glass standards represent an opportunity to enhance the quality and performance of sealed insulating glass units,” said Arthur M. Berkowitz, chairperson of the IG division, and president of J.E. Berkowitz L.P. “The commercial insulating glass fabricators that participate in the GANA insulating division recognize the need to ensure that our products will provide long-term performance when properly glazed. We feel the new standard specification and test method will assist our industry in striving to meet the needs of the architectural construction community.”
In addition, GANA’s IG division is also encouraging the ASTM E 06.22.05 task group on sealed insulating glass, the group responsible for developing the IG standards, to allow ASTM E 2188 and E 2190 supersede prior documents, E 773-01, Standard Test Method for Accelerated Weathering.
IGMA Publishes Glazing Guidelines
The Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) has released its North American Glazing Guidelines for Sealed Insulating Glass Units for Commercial and Residential Use, which feature advisory guidelines to assist in achieving long-term performance of sealed insulating glass units.
The guidelines were written as a result of open discussions and review by the IGMA Glazing Guidelines Task Group, and are intended for use by those who design, specify, manufacture and install insulating glass units. They have been developed in accordance with IGMA quality control and are subject to periodic review and change.
IGMA has provided these guidelines as a service to the industry to reflect the collective experiences of insulating glass manufacturers, glass and glazing material suppliers, design engineers, industry consultants and others experienced in successful glazing techniques. The guidelines are not a specification and are not intended to exclude other possible glazing practices.
Topics included in the publication include glass types, framing, glazing clearances, setting blocks, spacer shims, glazing materials, glazing systems, receiving, storage and handling and glass protection and cleaning.
Quanex Corp. Purchases Mikron Industries
Quanex Corp. of Houston announced that it has purchased the privately-held Mikron Industries for $205 million in cash. The acquisition was final December 9, 2004.
Mikron, headquartered in Kent, Wash., manufactures engineered vinyl and therm
plastic alloy composite window components, window coverings and door components.
“The addition of Mikron to our building products group is consistent with our strategy of growing our core engineered products business, which manufactures window and door components for the building products markets,” said Raymond Jean, chairperson and chief executive officer of Quanex.
ODL Acquires Viewlite International Ltd.
ODL Inc. of Zeeland, Mich., has announced that it completed the acquisition of U.K.-based Viewlite International Ltd. on January 7, 2005. ODL manufactures door lite units and products.
“The agreement provides ODL the means to strengthen our manufacturing, sales and distribution in the United Kingdom and Europe,” said Paul Meeuwsen, senior vice president, ODL.
Viewlite is located in Booth, U.K. and was founded in 1994.
According to Meeuwsen, ODL’s current distribution center in Skelmersdale, England, will be merged in the Bootle location later in 2005 in an effort to further streamline ODL’s United Kingdom distribution process.
“With the use of steel and fiberglass doors in the United Kingdom expanding tremendously in the past three years, Viewlite has grown to become the market leader in door lite frame sales in the United Kingdom, says Alan Cook, managing director of Viewlite.
Cook will lead the new ODL/ Viewlite Ltd. company, and says the acquisition should not affect Viewlite’s employees.
Style Solutions™ Obtains Fypon® Ltd.
Style Solutions of Archbold, Ohio, has purchased Fypon Ltd., of Seven Valleys, Pa., and is planning to grow the company with Fypon’s name strength and Style Solution’s products and service, according to Dave Goulette, vice president and general manager for Style Solutions.
“The marriage of these two companies results in a single company that can fulfill all the interior and exterior moulding and millwork needs of building industry professionals, architects and consumers nationwide,” said Goulette.
The company will offer an expanded product mix for use in a wide variety of commercial and residential projects.
“As part of the acquisition process, we will evaluate the product offerings of both companies,” said Goulette.
The change went in to effect February 22, 2005, and the company is using the Fypon name.
Mold & Moisture Management Magazine Has Debuted in 2005
Mold & Moisture Management magazine, the first publication for the mold prevention and abatement industry, debuted to excellent reviews.
The quarterly magazine, published by parent company Key Communications Inc., includes features regarding mold litigation, tools for preventing lawsuits, informational write-ups on products and services, the best materials for a mold-proof house and on whom the responsibility regarding residential mold sites resides.
Expert columnists, in-depth features and bountiful departments make Mold & Moisture Management magazine a must-read for anyone involved with mold prevention or remediation fields.
The magazine is designed for builders, contractors, remodelers, air quality specialists and everyone concerned with preventing or remediating mold. Initial circulation is 28,000. The magazine will be produced four times in 2005, six in 2006.

Solutia Implements Price Increase for Saflex™
Solutia Inc. announced that it has implemented a 29 cent per square meter price increase for its Saflex products.
“Solutia remains strongly committed to the announced price increase as a means of maintaining the most reliable service and certainty of supply for our customers,” said Mitch Pulwer, general manager, Solutia laminated glazing interlayers. “Customers demand for PVB products has increased dramatically year on year. The announced price increase allows Solutia to reinvest in capacity to meet these new volume challenges.
“Raw material costs have increased dramatically. Adding new capacity and keeping up with raw material price increases will continue to be challenges into the foreseeable future,” he added. “Solutia is very encouraged by the positive response that we have had so far in completing new contracts reflecting the announced increase in price. This illustrates that our customers are sensitive to market and industry needs.”
ADCO Products Announces Price Increase
ADCO Products Inc. of Michigan Center, Mich., has announced a percentage price increase range from 4 to ten percent on the majority of its products.
“We face continual increases in oil related base stocks, plastics, paper, steel, transportation cost and natural gas,” said president Jim Turner. “Despite our reluctance, we are acting now to assure the viability of our business and continuation of the high level of service (our customers) deserve.”
Other raw material increases are anticipated in 2005.
IGMA Undertakes Research Project to Determine Gas Permeability in IG Sealants
The Insulating Glass Manufac-tures Alliance (IGMA) is undertaking the first phase of a five-part research project designed to develop a new test method for measuring the rate at which argon permeates through a sheet of insulating glass (IG) sealant as a means to predict gas loss from an IG unit.
TNO of the Netherlands will be performing the actual testing; work will parallel testing that is being done on the European EN 1279 specification.
Other industry organizations are also taking part in the efforts, as IGMA invited other groups to co-sponsor the research. The American Architectural Manufacturers Association, the National Fenestration Rating Council and the Window and Door Manufacturers Association have each elected to participate in the first phase of the project.
Ultrafab and Collins Toker Agencies Establish Distribution Agreement
A.C. Engelfried, the president and CEO of Ultrafab Inc. and Roland Toker of Collins Toker Agencies Ltd. have jointly announced a stocking distribution agreement between the two companies. Under the agreement, Collins Toker Agencies, headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, will stock, sell and distribute Ultrafab’s pile weatherseal products to window and door manufacturers in the Western Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The local stocking of Ultrafab’s pile weatherseals will reduce lead-times and freight costs for customers in Western Canada, according to the company.
Collins Toker Agencies currently operates two warehouses in Kelowna, British Columbia and Winnipeg, Manitoba. The company will also continue to act as manufacturers’ representatives of a variety of non-pile weatherseal products for window and door manufacturers, according to the company.
ProPlastix International Inc. is Formed
G. Christopher Mathews has revealed the formation of a new manufacturing company called ProPlastix International Inc. The Millersburg, Pa.-based company will supply the OEM manufacturing and building products industry with extruded profiles and injection molded products. Mathews will serve as president and will oversee and implement a strategy to double the company in size over the next five years. Prior to joining ProPlastix, he served as vice president of sales and marketing for Chelsea Building Products.
The company has also launched a multi-million dollar expansion program to increase production capacity and cost efficiency.
Mike Martin will join the company as vice president of technical services and process engineering. He will work to help improve production efficiencies, consistent quality, reduce scrap and implement new technologies.
DAC Products Announces New Division
DAC Products of Rural Hall, N.C., a manufacturer of sample, display and marketing tools for the window and door industry, has announced the launch of a new division. Market Designs LLC is a full-service graphics company that DAC says will further integrate its product offerings.
The new division will provide complete creative and printing services to complement DAC’s sample and display cases. Customers will now be able to order a sample or display case with integrated graphics.
Digital printing equipment for printing full color, photo-quality images, as well as the ability to provide vinyl lettering and multiple screen-printing will be available.
DAC says its vision is to provide a one-stop resource for its customers’ sample and display needs.
Crystal Launches National Builder Marketing Program
Crystal Window & Door Systems has announced the introduction of a new national marketing program aimed at promoting its products with residential homebuilders and those who distribute building products to residential builders. The program is the first in a series of marketing initiatives to support the company’s new national sales organization.
The Crystal National Builder Marketing Program includes a provision, which allows qualified firms to be first in line to introduce the Crystal self-contained hideaway fire escape ladder window to its customers. This product is currently in development and will soon be available. Qualified participants in the marketing program will receive preferred status for ordering the new window as it comes on-line.
“Crystal wants to become the preferred window and door manufacturer of new home builders nationally. That’s why we’ve launched this new program that provides the products, pricing, sales tools and incentives this market needs now,” said James Barbara, vice president of sales.
ViWinTech Plans for $1.8 Million Expansion
Vinyl Window Technologies or ViWinTech has recently announced its plans for a $1.8 million expansion to its manufacturing facility in Paducah, Ky.
The demand for its products has grown dramatically, which is why the company plans to nearly double its manufacturing efforts with the expansion.
The expansion will create nearly 225 new jobs over the next three years. Structural changes include six new loading docks and an adjacent building, adding an additional 60,000 square feet to the manufacturing plant. The company’s expansion will also include adding and updating equipment.
ViWinTech currently employs about 250 workers in its plant and has experienced significant growth in the past year, reports Ken Barman, director of sales and marketing.
Livingston Affiliates Expands Door and Window Network
Livingston Affiliates, a consulting service based in Hackensack, N.J., announced that it has expanded its affiliate network to include consultants specializing in window and door product research and development, product engineering and organizational design. The expanded network will broaden the services available to clients in the fenestration industry.
“We offer a very unique blend of consulting services geared for sustainable business growth, from planning and marketing to operations and organization,” said Bob Nyman, partner.
According to company information, the network is designed to build on the company’s expertise and experience in the design, construction and building products sector, with particular emphasis on window and door manufacturing and installation. The group offers a vast array of consulting services including strategic planning, marketing and communications and now organizational design and product R&D engineering in select industries.
“I am very excited about the network of top-notch professionals we have assembled, and I know our clients, especially in the window and door industry, will be also,” said Nyman.
Three Building Product Manufacturers Contribute to Homes for Disabled Troops
Three building product manufacturers, Simonton Windows, Style Solutions and Hy-Lite Products, have joined forces to support the efforts of Homes For Our Troops, a non-profit organization that builds specially adapted homes for disabled veterans. The organization was founded by John Gonsalves, a Massachusetts contractor, after he learned that Sgt. Peter Damon had returned from Iraq with an injury that resulted in him losing both arms.
Led completely by a volunteer staff, Homes For Our Troops hopes to raise funds for and build several homes for soldiers. As the homes are constructed, the three companies will be on hand with donations. Simonton will donate Energy Star® compliant window packages with low-maintenance vinyl frames. Style Solutions will contribute a package of interior and exterior millwork products, while Hy-Lite will supply privacy-assuring acrylic block products.
“These returning soldiers will need easy-care, quality products in their homes,” said Chris Monroe, Simonton’s vice president of marketing. “We—and our sister companies—are pleased to be able to donate the products and support that will make the lives of returning service people better in some small way. We want to show the veterans how much we appreciate everything they’ve given for our country.”
WDMA Joins Efforts for the Presidential Commission on Security
The Window and Door Manufac-turers Association (WDMA) has joined others in the industry to educate the design and architectural community on the critical role doors play in effective building and homeland security. The Presidential Commission on Security was established to address the increased security role of commercial doors and hardware, according to the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI). It will develop security and life safety guidelines specifically for commercial architectural doors by building type.
“WDMA has always placed a premium on enhancing the security features of windows, doors and skylights,” said Alan J. Campbell, CAE and president of WDMA.
The commission, which is sponsored by the DHI, is comprised of members of WDMA, DHI, BHMA, HMA, AAMA, SDI and CSAA.
“They are working on guidelines to be used by architects, specifiers, building owners, consultants and distributors in the future when they are studying security issues related to new buildings and door and hardware products,” said Campbell.
MI Home Products, manufacturer of vinyl, aluminum and cellular composite windows and doors has changed its name to MI Windows and Doors Inc. in an effort to better reflect the company’s core business, according to the company.
