Win-door Wrap Up

Canada’s premiere fenestration trade show, Win-door North America 2005, enjoyed both attendee and exhibitor numbers that were up slightly from last year. The event attracted more than 165 exhibitors who displayed their products in 120,000 square feet of exhibit space. More than 3,000 attendees walked the aisles to discover the latest products and services offered by the industry.
Offering it All
“Win-door is truly the most complete fenestration industry package,” says Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA) president Luis Tourikan, whose organization sponsors the show. “Win-door North America has become truly synonymous with being the most focused show in the North American window and door market, and truly international in content and just keeps gaining strength.”
In addition to the trade show, the CWDMA offered two seminars: “Conden-sation: the Whys and Hows” and “Opportunities for Installer Certification.” The seminars were held on both full days of the show and the room was full of attendees. Other educational efforts include promoting window and balcony safety for children—a cause for which the CWDMA, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chiefs of Canada and SMARTRISK have partnered to promote at Win-door and all year-round.
Hardware exhibitors were plentiful at Win-door. Some offered new products while others added updates to existing ones.
The Door Guardian has added a child safety device to its patio door lock. But this doesn’t affect the look, according to Kevin Wiseberg, president, who says they look great on a door. The product also offers enhanced security, he adds.
“There has been phenomenal interest,” says Wiseberg. “We are one of North America’s top ten secrets.”
He adds that the company is looking at even more improvements in the future and patents on additional products.
Another company that added an update to an existing product is Truth Hardware, which added a new anti-slam feature to its two-point lock. This assures that the lock hooks can’t be damaged by closing the door accidentally while extended.
BronzeCraft featured a product so new that it didn’t yet have literature available. Its new bomb-blast hardware, which is manufactured in Belgium, is made specifically for hurricane-prone areas. It meets the General Service Administration’s level 3 requirements and has been tested to Miami-Dade standards.
BronzeCraft also featured the Monticelli die-cast aluminumcorner keys which received great interest from attendees. The product, that is manufactured in Italy, offers air and water protection and meets impact-tests. The corner keys may be assembled via a crimping machine, screwing system or pinning system to obtain a perfect corner joint, according to the company.
W & F Manufacturing introduced a product that the company says is an “industry first.”
The W & F Entrance Grip Handle Set to drive the Trilennium™ multi-point swing door lock system, is “the only entrance grip handle for a multi-point lock in the world,” according to literature from the company.
“Reaction to the product was very favorable,” says Dale Moses, marketing manager. “It is a brand new concept, but we are seeing more and more multi-point locks used on entry door application and people were glad to see the larger grips available.”
Wegoma by Carlson of Twinsburg, Ohio, introduced the UC series of up-cut saws. A blade size of 420- or 600-mm is available and will cut materials up to 15 degrees, according to the company. Both saws feature a hydro-pneumatic blade feed system to ensure a smooth cut and vertical and horizontal clamping. Safety features include a hood guard with safety interlock, two-hand blade feed control and a motor-brake mechanism.
Ameri-Can Machinery featured its universal 500M2K machine for cutting aluminum and PVC profiles. The machine features a left-hand cutting unit and a mobile right-hand cutting unit. The product’s software functions allow for memorization of profile data, executes cuts with automatic correction of the profile height and executes the recalculation of the cutting list according to the profile height.
Urban Machinery showcased its brand new CC500/CCN500 computerized horizontal double miter saw, which has cutting and fabrication capabilities. The machine includes an offload sweeper table, a fabrication bridge, notch blade assembly, manual loading infeed, pneumatic carriage sawblade stroke and software for the fabrication unit.
Pro-Line Automation Systems featured its Pro-Sash automatic welding, fabrication and corner cleaning center, which is a combination of the Pro-Weld FH-88 four head welding machine and Pro-Clean CNC-7300 CNC corner cleaning fabrication center.
The machine has an automatic two-tier transfer system that allows for simultaneous fabrication of two welded boxes at a time. Additionally, the machine is positioned horizontally for ease of operation.
Simon Fitzgerald, vice president of sales, says the product received a great deal of interest from attendees, and adds that the machine is very easy to use.
There were several software companies in attendance, and one of these, Automated Manufacturing Solutions, featured a new product that manufacturers can pass on to their dealers. The company’s Remote Order Entry System allows dealers to get quotes from manufacturers quickly and accurately. The company says the system was designed to allow product, options and pricing to be setup by non-technical personnel so employees have the ability to setup, maintain and control the system.
Doors and Windows
The recipient of Win-door’s Best Booth Award, Thermoplast, featured its Opera patio door featuring an all PVC 4 5/8-inch frame, a welded sash reinforced with sturdy galvanized steel and dual weatherstripping. According to the company, these features allow for home energy savings.
VEKA featured its 700 Series casement Combination Window featuring a triple seal, balanced sash lock, bay and bow configurations, heat-welded frame and sashes, among other attributes. The company says the window offers an uncluttered look while maximizing glass areas and exterior views. The window can be paired with the company’s geometric window shapes or grille configurations.
Win-door 2006 will be held November 7-9.
