Achieving Excellence in
by Kellie A. Schroeder, CMP, CAE
In August, the Moulding & Millwork Producers Association
(MMPA) will stage its 47th summer business meeting with the added flair
of a Plant Tour Education Day in North Carolina. Today’s business climate
demands moulding manufacturers achieve excellence in production each day
by optimizing their production lines to increase their bottom lines. The
MMPA continues to focus on assisting manufacturers in obtaining the information
and tools they require to be competitive in today’s millwork market. The
program outlined for North Carolina will build on this premise.
Suppliers Open Their Doors
Stiles Machinery, WoodEye North America and Michael Weinig Inc. are opening
their doors to the MMPA for a day of education. WoodEye North America
will have its equipment set within the Stiles Machinery facility for the
plant tours. Stiles and Weinig also have dedicated four hours on Monday,
August 9, to manufacturers and their questions or inquiries. Plant tour
attendees will be able to see, feel and touch the equipment of interest
to them, and then have their questions answered as to how each piece of
equipment may fit within their current operations.
As an added bonus, all three suppliers will round out the tours by inviting
other suppliers to the moulding industry to have informational tabletops
set up at their locations to further answer attendee questions.
Why is this plant tour education day different from others manufacturers
may have attended in the past? As attendees explore the possibilities
of finishing equipment, Hal Shackelford of Sherwin-Williams Co. will be
onsite to answer performance coating questions as it applies to the equipment
lending his expertise to the presentation. This format is a take on the
association’s Productivity Information Exchange (PIE) formula of experts
presenting with experts. (The next PIE event—a personal education day
for manufacturers designed by each attendee—will take place on the Isle
of Palms, S.C., in March 2011. Watch the MMPA website calendar of events
page for details at www.wmmpa.com.)
For those traveling with spouses, a separate program has been outlined
during the Stiles/Weinig tours to keep them engaged. Spouses will enjoy
a visit to the Bob Timberlake Gallery followed by a lunch and wine tasting
tour of Childress Winery.

The second day of the program will bring the group to East Coast Moulding
Co.’ s facility in Wilkesboro, N.C. East Coast Moulding will tour the
group through the facility, ending midday with a lunch. From there, a
golf and spa afternoon has been set up at Rock Barn Country Club &
Spa in Conover, N.C. Those desiring to play on the Robert Trent Jones
Championship Course will tee off at 1:30 p.m. Spouses may make advance
spa appointments for an afternoon of pampering if they choosenot to golf.
Down to MMPA Business
The group then will make its way to the historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville,
N.C., for the MMPA’s 47th summer business meeting taking place August
11-14. Highlighted session topics will include: Code Compliance Research
Report for Poly Manufacturers; Product Certification Program for Poly
Manufacturers; Dust Management; Briquetting Systems; Finishing; Leasing
Equipment in Today’s Economy; A Look at the Hardwood Market and Industry;
Key Provisions of the New Hire Act and Healthcare Reform Act; and the
