Getting Flexible
The new SCF-430 from Joseph Machine Co. is a (4) axis CNC machine center designed to perform milling, drilling and cutting operations in various aluminum profiles either in pairs or singles. Featuring a dual pusher in-feed system the new machine also comes complete with dual universal grippers that will accommodate material up to 10.00 inches in height and width.

According to company information, the fabrication section consists of a high-performance, precision pivoting milling/drilling spindle that covers the majority of the fabrication required in the industry. Tooling is provided by an automatic multi-station tool holder. It has a 30-inch diameter saw blade in the independent cutting station that allows it to perform precision sizing of a pair of profiles while minimizing processing times, according to the company. The line also comes with a matching out-feed protected roller system to accommodate processed lineal profiles. Optimization and special material handling components are optional.

HURRICANE GLASS
Door Glass for the Extreme
Engineered to withstand damaging weather conditions, ODL Inc., has updated its line of severe weather doorglass, and says the new design is easy to install and repair, features aesthetic enhancements and continues to meet the stringent requirements of wind-borne debris regions, including high-velocity hurricane zones.

The doorglass features a high-strength aluminum frame redesigned with reinforced corners in a narrow, attractive profile, with screw covers flush with the door. The frame allows the doorglass to fit into a standard door cutout and is available in a powder-coated white finish that can be painted or stained. Additionally, the frame’s coating is enhanced to help eliminate weathering and improve the lifespan of the frame.

According to the company, the new doorglass does not need a dealer-applied structural sealant, which eliminates the loss of production days waiting for the sealant to cure and saving dealers and builders time and money. Also, since the glass is not permanently bonded to the door with a structural sealant, it can be fully repaired on site if necessary.

Safety Points
The new SafePoint impact-resistant laminated glass package is now available from Simonton Windows. Available nationwide as an option on the company’s ProFinish Brickmould 600 doors and windows, the glass line is engineered to withstand high winds and flying debris, deter intruders and reduce unwanted outside noise in the home, according to the company. Products with SafePoint glass have passed ASTM E1886-05/1996-09 at the Missile C level and can withstand repeated blows by a heavy object.

Simonton ProFinish Brickmould 600 windows and doors feature a brickmould/J-channel design with a multi-tiered profile that meets architectural specifications and aids installation. With standard ProSolar low-E glass with an argon glass fill, Brickmould 600 products meet, or can be ordered to meet, Energy Star guidelines for all areas of the country, according to Simonton, adding that the SafePoint package is an optional upgrade for this product line.

These windows and patio doors come with optional Decorum by Simonton laminated woodgrain interiors and a variety of exterior colors, distinctive hardware, simulated divided lites and exterior flat casing trim that simulates the look of traditional wood doors and windows. The ProFinish Brickmould 600 Series comes with full screens that are standard with every window and is available in a wide selection of styles.

Sika Corp. of Madison Heights, Mich., introduced threaded nozzle 295-milliliter (ml) cartridges for Sikasil-GP silicone product. Sikasil-GP is a general purpose acetoxy cure silicone sealant for sealing and glazing of doors, windows and skylights, kitchen and bath countertops, sanitary seals, HVAC, plumbing, roofing, sealing trucks, trailers and RVs, marine applications and appliance assembly. The product is packaged in groups of 24 in 295-ml cartridges with two bags of 12 threaded nozzles per carton, in a variety of industry standard colors.

VACUUM INSULATING GLASS
Envelop Employee Issued Patent for VIG Unit
Robert Jones, an employee of Delafield, Wis.-based Envelop LLC, has been issued U.S. patent No. 8,182,887 for a “Vacuum Insulating Glass (VIG) Unit with Viscous Edge Seal.” According to the company, the VIG units include two spaced-apart glass sheets with a vacuum in between an array of spacers maintains separation of the sheets, and the units have a low permeability edge seal.

Edge seals covered by the new patent include a low permeability fluid that spans the edges of the glass sheets. The fluid undergoes viscous shear to accommodate differential thermal expansion and contraction between the glass sheets while generating minimal stress, according to the company. As a result, the design places no restriction on glass size. Tempered, laminated and coated glass can be used without damage because high temperatures are not needed for assembly.

The patent was first filed early last year and suggests there are “serious unresolved performance and reliability problems that continue to hamper development of commercially viable VIG units.”

Additionally, the patent says edge seal failure and fractures of non-ductile glass sheets are the most common performance issues.

“The patent record reveals an ongoing intensive effort to solve this problem by employing more flexible edge seal designs,” according to the patent. “The effort is spurred by a quest to capitalize on market demand for more energy efficient buildings. The demand is driven by a pressing need to forestall the mounting dangers of global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

3M’s LeadCheck is recognized by the EPA when used by a certified renovator. The 3M LeadCheck lead test kit can reliably determine that regulated lead-based paint is not present on wood, ferrous metal (alloys that contain iron), or drywall and plaster surfaces. Certified renovators seeking to use the test kit for purposes of meeting requirements in the RRP rule can purchase the test kits from either directly or from certain retail outlets.
