Lumber

Canadians to Receive Aid 
to Counter Effects of Lumber Tariff

LUMBER STACKED
Canadian softwood lumber producers are to receive an aid package to help those companies deal with the Canadian lumber tariff. 

According to a Vancouver Sun article published October 1, 2002, “The [Canadian] federal cabinet finally approved … an aid package aimed at helping communities and workers across Canada deal with the economic and social upheaval caused by punitive U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber totaling 27 percent.”

The program includes assistance under an employment insurance program and will help companies “offer training and job-sharing to displaced workers,” which is said to be valued at nearly $300 million, according to the article.

In other news relating to the Canadian lumber tariff, Tembec of Temiscaming, Quebec, recently announced it is closing its sawmill in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, due to the effects of the Canadian lumber tariff.

According to an article by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, “The company said the closure will take effect within the next month when its supplies of roundwood run out. The shutdown will affect 23 employees, in addition to 38 others who are already on temporary layoff. Tembec said it will keep another 19 employees at its drying and planing operations while lumber supplies last.”

White House Considers Changing Forest Plan
“The Bush administration wants to scrap a controversial requirement to survey for about 66 species prior to logging on federal forestland,” according to a recent article in The Olympian.

These surveys had been required in the past as part of the 1933 Northwest Forest Plan. 

“Environmentalists denounced the move … by the Bush administration, which was part of a settlement of a lawsuit brought by timber industry interests.”

Heather Brinton of the Western Environmental Law Center believes the Bush administration could be faced with more court challenges.

“The courts have already ruled that wildlife surveys are an essential part of the Northwest Forest Plan and that the plan represents the minimum legal protection for our ancient forest,” said Brinton. (See related article in October 2002 SHELTER, page 18.)

MOLD
Builders Tell Congress Sound Science Needed to Tackle Mold Issue 
WOOD HOME The nation’s home builders have told Congress that “research and information, not legislation and regulation,” are most needed to address the mold issue.

“The mold issue raises a number of legitimate questions that merit serious discussion and require further investigation,” Jerry Howard, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), told the House Financial Services Subcommittees on Housing and Community Opportunity and Oversight and Investigations. “Unfortunately, many of the legitimate issues have become obscured by litigation and misleading information. NAHB is determined to play a constructive role in resolving this issue, which is why we have moved aggressively to educate our membership and provide resources for consumers.”

He said science shows that three factors must be present for mold to grow: excessive moisture; a temperature between 40° degrees Fahrenheit and 100° degrees Fahrenheit; and an organic food source. The only factor that can be controlled is moisture. Mold is not a housing issue solely. Recent mold claims have also involved schools, government buildings and commercial buildings, which is logical given that conditions for mold are present in all indoor environments.

“All indoor environments must be considered if we are to address this issue,” said Howard. “NAHB encourages efforts to find ways to help prevent or minimize the conditions that lead to mold growth, and we support further research into construction practices, building materials, building design and occupant practices to identify factors associated with mold growth within indoor environments. Further, NAHB supports research on the potential health effects of mold exposure in indoor environments that will lead to scientifically sound and reliable data.”

NAHB is working diligently to educate industry professionals and consumers on the mold issue. Last month, the NAHB Research Center issued a paper that discusses what builders can do to help their buyers understand mold issues and how to deal with potential problems during the construction process. Gorell Offers Specialized Training to Dealers
GORELL As part of Gorell’s launch of its new American Conservatory line, the company recently invited dealers from throughout the United States to attend its first advanced conservatory training course held at its manufacturing facility in Indiana, Pa. 

Nearly 30 people attended this specialized training program, which focused on in-home sales presentations, technical product knowledge and design implications.

Universal Forest Products Agrees to Acquire Composite Wood Facility
Universal Forest Products Inc. of Grand Rapids, Mich., recently announced an agreement with Quality Wood Treating Co. Inc. to acquire its facility in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., which produces Everx® composite decking. In addition, the two companies have agreed to provide treated wood products from Quality’s locations in the Midwest. Quality expects total sales in excess of $125 million for fiscal year 2002.

Andersen Corp. Buys Certain Iron City Assets
The Anderson Corp., headquartered in Bayport, Minn., announced recently that its subsidiary, Andersen Logistics, has agreed to buy certain assets of Pittsburgh-based Iron City Sash & Door Co., an independent Andersen distributor in the mid-Atlantic region.

The Iron City assets that Anderson plans to purchase are in Baltimore, Rochester, N.Y., and Sandy Lake, Pa. In addition, the company says it will buy the Renewal by Andersen® replacement window retail operation in Pittsburgh, which Iron City Sash has operated since 2000.

Northern Building Products Acquires REPCO
Northern Building Products of Ridgefield, N.J., recently purchased the commercial and heavy commercial product line of Replacement Products Industries Corp. (REPCO). Northern will merge the REPCO products with its own product lines that include hung, sliding, projected, casement, tilt and turn windows, as well as sliding and terrace doors.

Therma-Tru Creates New Patio Doors Program
Therma-Tru Doors is establishing a separate patio door program from its fiberglass and steel exterior door systems. “This is exciting news for our company,” said Jerry Olenshansky, vice president of marketing and new business development. “We’ve offered patio doors as part of our product line for many years. However, we haven’t had a team dedicated to support our patio door efforts. Dirk Myers [who will be leading the program] is charged with leading the team to redefine the product offering and enhance the program to fulfill market needs.”

Precision Door Opens Two New Locations
Precision Door Services Inc. has opened a franchise operation in Rockledge, Fla., and its first franchise on Florida’s Gulf Coast in Clearwater. The company sold its Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C., franchise.

NATL BLDG MUSEUM WEB PAGE The National Building Museum (NBM) of Washington, D.C., recently announced the launch of a new virtual exhibition—Building America. Norfield Industries and Vega Automation Form Strategic Alliance
Norfield Industries of Chico, Calif., recently announced the formation of a strategic alliance with Vega Automation of Toronto to market door and window machinery in the United States, Canada and internationally. This alliance, Norfield, marks a new direction for both companies, according to the design and manufacturing agility of Vega with the sales and marketing strength of Norfield.

“We have several new products to bring to the pre-hung door industry,” said Mike Bevens, director of sales and marketing at Norfield. “This alliance means that we can reduce the time it takes for both of our companies to go from concept and design to putting a functional machine into the hands of our customers.”

Tucker Millworks Forms Partnership with Barnett Millworks
Tucker Millworks of Lithonia, Ga., recently announced the initiation of a new sales and marketing partnership for its new Genesis family of window products with Barnett Millworks of Theodore, Ala. 

As of October 1, 2002, Barnett has been designated as the exclusive distributor for Genesis products in Eastern Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle as far east as Tallahassee.

Georgia-Pacific Delays Separation
Georgia-Pacific Corp. of Atlanta recently announced that it is delaying the separation of its consumer products and packaging business due to current conditions in the financial markets, the continued weak business environment in its building products segment and the pending divestiture of its Unisource paper distribution subsidiary.

In May, Georgia-Pacific’s board authorized management to proceed with the separation of the company’s consumer products and packaging business and its building products and distribution business into two publicly traded companies, subject to suitable business and capital market conditions. Based on a thorough evaluation of current debt and equity markets and the current environment in the building products segment, the company and its advisors say they have decided to delay the planned separation.

Georgia-Pacific also indicated that negotiations on its previously announced sale of its Unisource subsidiary to Bain Capital are proceeding on schedule. The company expects to close the transaction in the fourth quarter.

In other company news, Georgia-Pacific Corp. has announced the completion of its previously announced asset exchange with Louisiana-Pacific Corp. (LP). Georgia-Pacific divested to LP its Woodland, Maine, oriented-strand-board facility and acquired four plywood facilities in Texas and Louisiana, as well as a medium-density-fiberboard facility in Louisiana. 

The transaction allows Georgia-Pacific to acquire plants that geographically complement its existing structural panels manufacturing and distribution capabilities, said the company. 

Facilities at Cleveland, Texas, and Logansport, La., will continue operating, with production increasing over time. The plant at Bon Wier, Texas, as well as the two plants 

at Urania, La., all of which were idled by LP, will remain idled and in a position so they may be restarted as conditions dictate, said the company. 

White House Now Using Measuring and Gauging Device
WHITE HOUSE The White House has joined several companies, such as Winnebago, Boeing and J&J Cabinets, in the ranks of TigerStopTM users, according to TigerStop Inc. of Vancouver, Wash. The TigerStop, a measuring and gauging device for metal, plastic and wood manufacturers, will be used to construct and repair podiums, platforms and other structures, including arbors for elaborate garden parties on the White House grounds.

“It’s quite a coup for us,” said Spencer Dick, president and chief executive officer of TigerStop Inc. “We’re thrilled that the White House is now using a TigerStop. It affirms our belief that everyone in manufacturing from small cabinet shops to Fortune 500 companies to the White House can use a TigerStop.”

In other news, the company has announced the successful achievement of two company milestones—the certification of its 100th sales person and the opening of its 1,500-square-foot state-of-the-art, on-site training facility.

In an effort to continue to increase business, expand its training capabilities and maintain its position as an industry leader, TigerStop recently opened the training center on the first floor of its Vancouver headquarters. The training center permanently houses six different operational applications set up for demonstration and training purposes. Three additional applications are housed in an annex for use during two-day seminars. 

Community Involvement Window Replacement Dealer Goes Extra Mile

Sunrise Windows, headquartered in Temperance, Mich., recently sponsored a team in the 21st annual MS 150 Bike Tour, sponsored by the Greater Illinois Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. This bike tour is a 75-mile ride from the University of Illinois-Chicago campus to the Kankakee County Fairgrounds and back.

Howard Weiss, president of Trim-A-Scal, a replacement window, door and siding dealer located in Gary, Ind., has participated with the Sunrise team in the fundraising event two years in a row.
“I view these rides as a personal challenge,” said Weiss. “But people with [multiple sclerosis] face much greater challenges every day just to walk or go to the store. My reward on this ride is the sweat we give and the smiles we get in helping people overcome those challenges.”

“Having a nice place to live is not just about repairing or renovating our homes,” said Gary Delman, president of Sunrise Windows. “It’s also about getting involved and creating a nice place to live for your community. We encourage companies to step up and make a difference.”
