The Gift of Time
NSDJA Celebrates 40 Years of Millwork Magic
by George W. Lorenz

The National Sash and Door Jobbers’ (NSDJA) winter meeting was held March 27-30 at the Orlando World Center Marriott Hotel, our 2003 convention hotel. It was a productive meeting and, as a result, I began to appreciate just how fortunate we are to have so many enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers in our association.

NSDJA is celebrating 40 years of service to our industry. The theme selected to recognize this achievement for the October convention will be “40 Years of Millwork Magic.”

Over the years our industry has gone through many changes and NSDJA has always responded well to meet the challenges as they occurred. Today the changes seem to be coming faster and are more complex.

Volunteer Duty
At the conclusion of the board meeting, while reflecting on what was accomplished and the number of initiatives on which the members present had agreed to work, I was inspired by the willingness, determination and energy shown to tackle the issues. As a result, I found myself recalling and appreciating the message given at another event I attended recently.

This past Valentine’s Day, The Volunteer Center (an agency that serves as the focal point for coordinating the volunteers within our local community) held its Annual Volunteer Recognition Awards Luncheon and Celebration. Archbishop Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee was the keynote speaker. His message focused on the work provided by volunteers. He described the gifts that were given by those present, who have volunteered to share their talent, energy, knowledge, resources and skills with others.

He described how our communities become stronger when individuals make themselves available to meet the many needs of our educational system, youth programs, churches and social service agencies.

Each volunteer brings his unique, needed individual talents, but it is the combination of the many talents of volunteers working together that enable organizations to benefit, grow and prosper while carrying out their specific missions.

The Gift of Time
Financial contributions are also important and vital to the success of the organizations you choose to support. But, it is your willingness to give the gift of time that is most precious.

Over the past 40 years, NSDJA has succeeded because our distributor and associate members have been willing to give that precious gift of their time to fill the volunteer positions on the education, membership, finance, convention planning, exhibit hall, long range/strategic planning, executive committee and the board of
directors. As NSDJA moves forward to meet the new challenges we will face, we will ask for volunteers to give us something only you have to give: the gift of time.
