SHELTER Reveals Its Second Annual "Product of the Year" Awards
 

Have you ever wondered what other distributors are thinking of adding to their product lines? SHELTER’s “Product of the Year” Awards is a good indication of what your peers might be interested in distributing. Below you will find the winners of the Second Annual “Product of the Year” Awards. These products are those that received the highest amount of reader interest—as determined by reader-service responses in a year’s time.

First Place Award Winner: 
Georgia-Pacific Brochure Showcases Moulding Designs
Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific (G-P) provides ideas for the use of combination moulding in every room of the house in its “Combination Moulding Designs” brochure. 

The brochure offers an introduction to moulding profiles and includes color photographs. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate the exact combination of mouldings used in each photograph and identify each kind.

Georgia-Pacific offers a full line of high-quality softwood, hardwood and medium-density-fiberboard lengths shaped for use as crown moulding, picture moulding, base and base cap, chair rail, door and window trim.

Second Place Award Winner:
Anchor Expands Durable Deck™ Line
Pompano Beach, Fla.-based Anchor Systems Inc. has expanded its product line with two new products: Durable Deck Structural Board and Durable Deck Cap.

According to the company, Durable Deck Structural Board is a strong, lightweight board designed to be installed directly onto stringers. It serves as an alternative to traditional wood decking surfaces. Likewise, the Durable Deck Cap enables the builder to cover number-two-grade pressure-treated lumber with an easily applied cap, which can also be used to cover existing deck boards and stair treads where board spacing allows.

Both of these new products feature the company’s patented slip-resistant surface, which is created from GEON™ polyvinyl chloride.

Third Place Award Winner:
Elk Expands Decking Line
Elk Composite Building Products of Lenexa, Kan., has expanded its CrossTimbers composite decking and fencing line with new accessories and designer finishes.

CrossTimbers’ new embossed finish, available on deck boards, fascia and fence pickets, gives the appearance of natural wood without the headache of warping and rotting. CrossTimbers is also available in a more subtle, brushed finish. Both finishes are reversible with a smooth side.

In addition, CrossTimbers now offers a 4-inch by 4-inch post for hand rails with post caps and collars, and a 1-inch by 1-inch corner trim piece to cover the deck board ends. These new accessories work in conjunction with existing 2-inch by 4-inch hand rails, 2-inch by 2-inch balusters, 1/2-inch by 6-inch fascia and 5/4-inch by 6-inch deck boards.

Fourth Place:
BW Introduces Architectural Balusters
Maple Ridge, British Columbia-based B.W. Creative Wood’s RAIL SIMPLE™ Architectural Balusters are shaped from high-quality aluminum with a low-maintenance, rust-free premium powder-coated finish and backed with a 25-year warranty. 

The Venetian balusters are uniquely designed to replace angle-cut wooden balusters and are wider (1 ½-inch) and longer (42-inch) balusters. 

Seemore balusters are designed to offer enhanced viewing through the railing. Seemore balusters are 11/16 inches and 31 inches and are designed for a 36-inch height railing system.

Fifth Place:
Fastener System Speeds Deck Installation
Valley Forge, Pa., CertainTeed Corp. has introduced a Hidden Fastener System (HFS™) option for its Boardwalk Composite Decking line. 

With no under-the-deck work required, the HFS is up to 50 percent faster to install than traditional decking systems. Each plank in the new deck system features a recess, or notch, that accepts a specially-designed, self-aligning hold-down clip for a quick installation.

To install, contractors need only one #8 by 2-inch deck screw per joist. The screw is used to conventionally fasten the first plank to the joist at one end of the deck, dock or porch. Then, at each joist, an HFS clip is slipped into the plank’s notch and fastened with a screw to secure the plank.

CBP Introduces CorrectDeck
Correct Building Products (CBP) of Biddeford, Maine, manufacturers the CorrectDeck System, which it says provides professionals with a dependable and labor-saving installation method that will allow them to consistently deliver the best looking and highest performance decks to their customers. System components include RapidRail, a fascia, post caps and skirts. 

According to a company release, CorrectDeck’s hot-roller embossed wood-grain surface looks more like natural wood than other composites while providing superior traction. 

The CorrectDeck Signature Series in conjunction with the Correct-TY hidden fastener system, quickly and easily delivers a drill-free surface.

Custom Service Hardware Introduces New Catalog
Custom Service Hardware Inc. of Cedarburg, Wis., has introduced its new  comprehensive color catalog. Some of the items included are concealed roller drawer slides, full-extension and self-closing precision ball-bearing drawer slides, conceal-a-door pocket doors, plastic shelf standards, kitchen island turnings and decorative hardware collections.

Seventh Place:
Dixie-Pacific’s Railing System Uses New Technology
Gadsden, Ala.-based Dixie-Pacific’s QuickRail™ synthetic railing system is one of the most technologically-advanced systems on the market. QuickRail is manufactured from a tri-layered composite technology—a unique patented process that provides greater strength than standard mono-extruded PVC railing systems. It provides thicker walls, greater stiffness and rigidity with  decay, warp, fade, splinter or rust. 

The system is available in two colors: vibrant white and desert tan and never needs to be painted. A special ingredient, titanium dioxide, protects the system from UV rays and ensures color retention.

Rail kits are available in 6-, 8-, 10- and 12-foot lengths and are offered in 36 inches and 42 inches. There are two spindle choices—square or colonial—and two top rail choices—deluxe or flat.

L.B. Plastics Adds PVC Decking
Mooresville, N.C.-based L.B. Plastics recently unveiled a new PVC deck surface for its Sheerline® decking series. According to the company, the  Sheerline PVC is soft, yet slip-resistant. The company says the one-piece decking can be installed quickly and can provide long-term savings for homeowners and commercial establishments. The new deck is available in white, beige or gray, and has high resistance to force of impact and ultraviolet rays.

Ninth Place 
AMSCO Windows® Launches Renaissance™ Series
AMSCO Windows of Salt Lake City offers the new Renaissance Series and Renaissance Masters Series composite windows. 

According to a company release, AMSCO’s exclusive Supercap® system allows the company to provide color options far superior than paint. This co-extruded process provides excellent resistance to scratching and peeling, and a solar reflective additive aids in preventing fading and chalking over time. The Renaissance Series is available in white, almond and taupe and offers a pine wood veneer that can be stained or painted to match a home’s interior. The Renaissance Masters Series offers even more color and wood combinations and will be available in 2005. 

AMSCO windows are currently available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Bendix Mouldings Inc. of Orangeburg, N.Y., has a new line of hand-carved  wood mouldings, ornaments and corbels. The company says it can custom-carve any moulding, ornament or corbel in any design or size required.

The company’s corbels can be used singularly or as a group to enhance the decoration of the home, furnishings or cabinetry.

Lumber Loc™ Allows for Board Expansion
KK Mfg. Co., Inc. manufactures Lumber Loc Exotic hidden deck fasteners for the deck and dock industry. The company says it is the only fastener that allows for expansion and contraction on the length and width of a deck board which occurs naturally on all woods and composites. The fastener also eliminates pre-drilling. 

According to the company, Lumber Loc™ is the perfect partner for the growing number of exotic hardwoods on the market today.

Easy-Arch Offers Adjustable Arch
Easy-Arch the makers of the Easy-Arch metal framing arch are now offering the Adjustable Easy-Arch for openings that are larger in depth.
The Adjustable Easy-Arch is made from pre-formed 20-gauge galvanized steel and can be adjusted to fit nearly any opening from 2.5 inches to 12.5 inches in depth. Created initially to address the problems of radius window framing in buildings with unconventional studs and headers, the Adjustable  Easy-Arch allows for constructing arches without the need for expensive on-site fabricating. While lowering construction costs and improving quality control, the Adjustable Easy-Arch lets building professionals create arches in:
