     The Window Guy

Ode to the Window Guy
by R. Mark Reasbeck

There’s a semi in the dock,
With 500 windows to unload.
Driver missed the turn to Vegas,
Two extra days on the road.

Three people called in sick,
Three more forty minutes late.
Phones ringing off the hook,
Guess line four will hafta wait.
I LOVE THIS BIDNESS!

Too many calls about “stress-cracks,”
And “My windows ... they won’t slide.”
“This screen door is defective ...”
My service manager wants to hide.

There’s another monthly surcharge,
Two flat tires in one week.
The motor froze on truck seven,
One less vehicle in the fleet.
I LOVE THIS BIDNESS!!

I’ve got PA’s requesting samples,
“We’d like to see your wares.”
Deep down I really know,
Lowest price is all he cares.

“Your bid’s too high,
Got a better price from X, Y, Z,”
For 15 dollars a house,
You wouldn’t contract it with me??
I LOVE THIS BIDNESS

The lawyers, they seem relentless,
Between the summons and depositions.
Wasted hours in courtrooms,
Oops, today it’s off to mediation.

I rummage through the mail,
Scanning junk and credit card offers.
On no, I don’t see any checks,
This is not good for the coffers.
I LOVE THIS BIDNESS.

But in the midst of all this hassle,
Don’t think I’ve ever been bored.
I still work for myself,
That alone is it’s reward.

Been a window guy over 20 years,
Guess it’s engraved into my heart.
I’m too old to change horses,
Wouldn’t have a clue where to start.
I LOVE THIS BIDNESS.
