Sealing Out Water: Deck Protector Keeps it Dry
Grace Construction Products of Cambridge, Mass., offers Grace Vycor Deck Protector® self-adhered flashing as a solution to extend the life of decks by protecting against corrosion and joist rot. The product seals out water from decks and provides additional corrosion-resistance with galvanized connectors and pressure-treated wood.
Because of the potential for adverse environmental and health effects, traditional arsenic-based chromated-copper arsenate (CCA) treatments can no longer be used in wood for residential construction. The new wood preservatives that have replaced CCA are expected to be safer and more environmentally sensitive; however, these new pressure-treatment chemicals are more corrosive, accelerating the corrosion of the galvanized metal components used on exterior decks, according to the company.
The new product is a formulated solution to help reduce corrosion of galvanized metal connectors. It is installed between the connector and the pressure-treated wood, acting as a barrier layer to break the electric circuit and thus helping reduce corrosion. It also helps reduce the corrosion rate of galvanized nails that attach the connectors to the treated wood, by separating them from the corrosion influence of the large connector.
