Shelter Seeks to Answer Questions about the
Side-Hinged Exterior Door Standard
This issue of Shelter is full of must reads—from the industry’s top innovators, to show previews, to products, to the HARDscapes section, to columns, including Warehouse Call, Shades of Green (a new column on the green building industry), Moulding the Future and Window Guy.
As in November-December 2007’s issue, there is a topic stealing the limelight in my editor’s column—and it’s the side-hinged exterior door standard. In my article on page 16, I have answered a number of questions about the standard, such as: What the standard is? What is its origin? What impact would it have on distributors, suppliers and manufacturers? Where is it in the code process? Would it improve standards?—and more.
Quite frankly, there are still some questions left unanswered, and many entry door system manufacturers were reluctant to talk, but as one distributor said to me, “If I were a door manufacturer I wouldn’t want to talk to you.” So I will leave that up to you. If you haven’t contacted your component supplier or door supplier to see where they stand on the side-hinged exterior door standard, you should. This is not a topic where you should just wait and see what happens.
