Fire Destroys AAPC Plant; Arson Suspected as Probable Cause

Boardman, OH-based American Architectural Products Corporation (AAPC) has announced the closure of the Kreidel Plastics extrusion plant in Barberton, OH. The plant, operated by its subsidiary American Weather-Seal Company, was destroyed in a fire on October 1, 1999. A former employee has been charged with setting the blaze intentionally.

“It is unfortunate that one individual can create such hardship for so many others, however, the costs and difficulty in rebuilding the operations exceeds any anticipated benefit and therefore we are left with no other reasonable alternative but to discontinue the operation,” said Frank Amedia, president and chief
executive officer.

Eagle Named Multiple
Award Winner

EAGLE Window & Door Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Architectural Products Corporation based in Dubuque, IA, has won a number of awards during 1999. In February, EAGLE received one first place award, two second place, and one third place awards in the Advertisers of Dubuque “Addy” Awards competition. In March, the company was recognized by McGraw-Hill’s Architectural Record Magazine with an honorable mention in their Awards for Excellence in Advertising competition. In April, Building, Design and Construction presented EAGLE with its Outstanding Advertising Award.

In June, a Best Multiple Booth Award for its tradeshow exhibit was given to EAGLE during the Construction Specification Institute’s Convention and Exhibit in Los Angeles. In October, the company was featured in six of the 36 winning entries in the 19th annual Builder’s Choice Awards, and finally, EAGLE was honored in October’s Better Business Bureau of Greater Iowa Integrity Awards.

LCS Adds Canadian Warehouse

LCS Precision Molding of Elysian, MN, formerly Lake Country Sales Inc., has recently added a Canadian warehouse to handle its line of window and door components. The new facility is located in Oakville, Ontario. The company says it expects to shorten manufacturing lead-times on stock orders, and reduce freight costs and delivery times by adding the new warehouse.

PPG Licenses Warm-Edge to Three

PPG Industries of Pittsburgh, has announced the addition of three more window manufacturers as licensees to utilize the company’s Intercept insulating glass unit technology to produce energy-efficient “warm-edge” units. The newly licensed companies are MGM Industries of Hendersonville, TN, Jannock Vinyl Group of Pittsburgh, and Marshall Vinyl Windows of Corona, CA. PPG says its Intercept technology accounts for more than 40 percent of insulating glass unit production in North America. More than 70 window and insulating unit manufacturers in six countries have been licensed to use PPG’s Intercept technology.

Simonton Withdraws Plans for
One Facility; Opens Another

Simonton Windows of Parkersburg, WV, which had announced plans to buy the former Delphi plant in Albany, GA, has declined to purchase the plant and its surrounding property, citing geographical shifts in its product growth as the predominate factor in the decision.

While the company will not open the Georgia plant, it announced plans to open its sixth plant in May. According to the company, the facility will be used for the manufacture of vinyl replacement and new construction windows. The 287,000-square-foot, $12 million facility will be located on 97 acres in Albany, GA. The plant will distribute the company’s full line of windows.
