The Week that Was

More than a few readers have told me this week that they now understand why we decided to create a separate publication to cover auto glass replacement and repair news. Given all the news being made, it would have been impossible to fit everything in USGlass magazine, along with architectural glass news. Consider what has happened already this month:

Monday, June 5: Pilkington (now sans the LOF part of its name) announces the purchase of controlling equity in Visteon Glass Systems. This includes Visteon’s architectural glass, automotive glass and Carlite divisions;

Thursday, June 8: Our automotive glass publication AGRR: the magazine driving the auto glass repair and replacement industry breaks the story that the nation’s largest retailer of auto glass replacement is expected to file bankruptcy the next day;

Friday, June 9: Safelite Glass Corporation files for protection under Chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Code;

Tuesday, June 13: PPG Industries of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Apogee Enterprises Inc. of Minneapolis, Minn., announce the formation of a new company called PPG Auto Glass LLC to provide distribution services to the AGR industry. PPG owns 66 percent and Apogee owns 34 percent of the new company.

In the space of just eight days, the entire face of the automotive glass industry (and a good bit of the architectural glass industry) has changed profoundly. It will take us all a bit of time to figure out exactly what this means to our respective businesses and the industry as a whole.

Meanwhile, we continue to cover these events in detail, in USGlass magazine (see page 14), in the “Hot News” section of our website at http://www.glass.com, and in AGRR magazine. You’ll find most auto-related news in AGRR. The next issue will detail the effects of each of these changes of the AGR industry and will include an interview with Safelite’s CEO and president John Barlow.

Working in the glass industry is, at times, exasperating, bewildering and chaotic. This week reminds us that it is always, above all else, interesting.
