UCB Completes Expansion Plan

UCB Chemicals USA, based in Smyrna, Ga., has announced that it is suspending the sales control previously placed on its four major acrylated multifunctional monomers, TMPTAN, TRPGDA, HDODA, and TMPEOTA, all of which are used in coatings for glass. With the sales control lift, customers will be able to purchase the monomers more freely without the limits and restraints of before caused by an extremely high demand for the products.

In addition, UCB recently utilized several de-bottlenecking measures at its plant in Pampa, Texas, which increased the plant’s output to record levels. Both actions are part of UCB’s plan to increase worldwide capacity of acrylated multifunctional monomers.

 

W.R. Grace & Company Purchases $30 Million Division of DuPont

W.R. Grace & Company, located in Columbia, Md., recently purchased the global Ludox colloidal silicas business of the DuPont Company, located in East Chicago, Ind. The new addition to W.R. Grace & Company has a worldwide annual sales record of $30
million.

“DuPont’s Ludox silica business has a history of sound revenue growth and strong brand recognition,” said Greg Poling, vice president and general manager of W.R. Grace & Company. “Colloidal silica has unique characteristics that can be sold to a wide variety of customers.”

 

New Membership Classification Added to GANA’s Roster

The Glass Association of North America (GANA), headquartered in Topeka, Kan., added an affiliate membership classification to its association. Affiliates will operate under the same dues category structure as division members, but will have a separate listing in the membership directory.

According to GANA, the new category was created to include architects, engineers, consulting firms, test laboratories and others involved with architectural, automotive and specialty glass applications.

Affiliate members can take advantage of the same division member benefits such as discounted registration to GANA programs and conferences, a quarterly newsletter and complimentary glass informational bulletins.

 

Citations of Excellence Awarded to Interpane

The annual ADDY competition, held in Fayeteville, N.C., and sponsored by the American Advertising Federation saw two projects from Interpane Glass Co. earn Citations of Excellence.

The Clinton, N.C., company was honored for its 2000 all-product catalog, which features photographs of commercial buildings worldwide that use Interpane’s high-performance architectural glass.

 

TRACO Sponsors National Essay Contest: “What the Statue of Liberty Means to me”

Fifth grade students in several cities recently had the opportunity to show a bit of patriotism by participating in TRACO’s annual essay contest. This year’s topic, “What the Statue of Liberty Means to Me,” drew close to 1,000 essays from students in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Nashville and Red Oak, Iowa.

According to the company, the purpose of the essay contest was to provide a positive platform for students to get involved with their communities, as well as build stronger relationships within the cities in which TRACO is located. The topic was chosen due to TRACO’s involvement in handcrafting 25 windows in the crown of the Statue of Liberty.

In addition, the Pittsburgh Technology Council has recognized TRACO as one of the top 50 fastest-growing high-technology firms in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The award recognizes companies that actively develop, manufacture or utilize advanced technology or technology-based products or function as a value-added reseller of such products.

 

 Valspar and Lilly Await Merger

The Valspar Corporation, located in Minneapolis, and Lilly Industries, located in Indianapolis, have announced a possible merger, pending approval from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). After a waiting period, determined by the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, the two companies will become one. Shareholders are encouraged to contact the company immediately for information on how they may be affected.
