Unions
Iron Workers Union Elects Joe Hunt President; Accepts Jake West’s Resignation
The general executive council of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers unanimously elected Joe Hunt the union’s general president upon former president Jake West’s February 23 resignation. 

According to the March 5, 2001 Engineering News Record (ENR), West’s decision to step down prior to the group’s August 2001 election puts Hunt in good standing to run as an incumbent, which he plans to do. His current term runs through December 2001.

ENR also reported that West, who has been under federal investigation for allegedly using union funds for personal expenses, had planned to run for re-election in August, but “union insiders persuaded [him] to step aside … because his election was no longer guaranteed.” 

“The resignation is for personal and union reasons and has nothing to do with the pending investigation,” said Cary Feldman, West’s attorney.
West has been given the title president emeritus. 

Obituary
Harris Perilstein Passes Away
Harris Perilstein, chairman of the board of Perilstein Distributing Corp. of Cheswick, Pa., passed away on April 16, 2001 after a two-year fight with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Perilstein started in the glass business in 1945 as the third generation of Perilsteins in the industry. 
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ettie, daughter Marcie, sons Steven and Max, daughter-in-laws, Amy and Beth, and five grandchildren.

Azon Names New VP Sales and Marketingschwabauer
Azon USA of Kalamazoo, Mich., has announced the arrival of Jerry Schwabauer as the company’s new vice president of sales and marketing. Schwabauer will handle the strategic management of the company’s global sales and marketing.
 
Prior to joining Azon, Schwabauer served as the global marketing manager for the animal division at Pharmacia & Upjohn. He has more than 20 years of experience in the sales and marketing field, and holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Western Michigan University, with additional professional development at Penn State, the University of Michigan and Hillsdale College.

BOCA Names Pfeiffer Vice President of Codes and Standards
BOCA International has named Michael Pfeiffer as vice president of codes and standards. Pfeiffer started with BOCA as a staff engineer in 1897, was promoted to supervising engineer of plan review and code interpretation in 1991 and became manager of technical services in 1993. He also teaches seminars on BOCA building and residential code.

He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering, an MBA and is a registered professional engineer. Before working with BOCA, he worked with an architectural firm as a structural engineer.

Spectra Announces Sales Representative Appointment
Woodbridge, Ontario’s Spectra Aluminum Products has appointed Joe D. Smith as its new sales representative for the southeastern United States.

“Joe brings us more than 23 years of industry experience and will undoubtedly prove to be a valuable asset to our team,” said Brian Hudson, Spectra president.


Byung Chan Lee Appointed at SPD Inc.
SPD Inc., a subsidiary of Hankuk Glass Industries Inc., has announced that Byung Chan Lee will take over the position of chief of sales and marketing. 
Lee had served as the vice president of sales and marketing of Hankuk Sekurit Ltd. since 1999. He has also previously worked for Hankuk Glass Industries in various new business development, manufacturing and engineering operations since 1975. He is a graduate of Yonsei University in Seoul. He holds a master of industrial science degree, as well as a bachelor’s of science degree in engineering.


Kmarkgoggansawneer Company Appoints New Manager
Mark Goggans has been appointed manager of transportation and logistics at Kawneer Co. Inc. of Norcross, Ga. With more than ten years  experience in the transportation industry, including management positions at J.B. Hunt Transport Inc., and Ryder Integrated Logistics, Goggans holds a bachelor’s of science degree in management from Georgia Institute of Technology.


Sales Staff Expansions Underway at GED
Three sales positions have recently been filled at Glass Equipment Development (GED) of Twinsburg, Ohio. 

Mark Dobransky has joined as the company’s regional sales manager, responsible for the Western region. In this position he will promote cost-effective business solutions to better serve insulating glass (IG) fabricators in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, California, Arizona and New Mexico, as well as British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. 

Also new to GED are Bill Weaver and Loyd McCoy. Weaver, who was previously Western regional sales manager, has been promoted to the director of Western IG sales position. McCoy has taken on the role of director of Eastern IG sales.

Nthomaschenew Achievement for Crystal Window and Door Systems President
The president and founder of Crystal Window and Door Systems Ltd., Thomas Chen, recently was elected to the board of the Queensborough Community College (QCC) Fund Inc., part of the City of New York University in Bayside, of Queens, N.Y. 

Comprised mainly of business people with ties to the Queens community, the QCC Fund board of directors works to provide support and guidance for a non-profit organization that raises funds for the advancement of educational and cultural programs for the college. 

“I am proud to be part of this prestigious group of dedicated people. Immigrating to the United States with only a modest education, I, perhaps more than most people, appreciate the value that a quality college education holds. The efforts of the QCC and its board seek to assist the educational and cultural programs at Queensborough, and to make a good college better for the students and the community,” said Chen.


Promotions 
Abrasive Technology Announces Promotions and Appointments
Abrasive Technology of Lewis Center, Ohio, has added several new faces to its team. Krista O’Reilly has been promoted to the newly-created position of customer communications team leader. She has been with the company since 1994, and served as a customer service representative before being promoted to the position of market representative for the industrial group. In her new position she will direct the customer communication initiatives for all ten Abrasive locations.

Also new to the company is Leanne Dome, who has joined as a process development and quality engineer in the research/quality group. In this role she will apply engineering statistics within quality assurance and manufacturing operations.

Jason Williamson has also been appointed as an information technology specialist in the information technology group. Williamson’s responsibilities will be to diagnose and repair company computers.


Promotions Announced for Harmon Inc.’s Cincinnati Office 
Harmon Inc.’s Cincinnati office has a new operations manager—Tim Scherrer. In this new role, his responsibilities include overseeing the project managers, general field superintendent and the field staff.

Scherrer has more than 20 years experience in the construction industry, and began his career with Harmon as a project manager.
Jim Benagh has been promoted to general manager of Harmon Inc.’s Cincinnati office. His new position concentrates on business development opportunities in the Cincinnati area. 

Benagh began his career with Harmon as a senior project manager and has nearly 30 years of experience in the construction industry. 


Mott Promoted to Management Position for G-U Hardware
Blake Mott has been promoted to the position of manager, engineering and technical services for Newport News, Va.-based G-U Hardware. 

Prior to his new position, Mott served as a sales engineer and mechanical application technician, and has been with the company since 1993. He also played a major role in the design and implementation of the company’s
website.

AFG Industries Inc.

AFG has named Fred Wallin vice president of its newly-formed sales and marketing department. With the combination of the two departments and a new position, Wallin faces many challenges, yet still has positive expectations for the growth of his team.

Q. How long have you been with AFG?
Five years this summer.

Q. What are some of the challenges you face in your new position with the sales staff?
The biggest challenge we face is the same one as President Bush. The economy fell as soon as we took the new position. It’s not our fault, but it is our responsibility to create the solutions. We think the economy will improve better than projected, though. We are dealing with an evolution in the gross market and a revolution at AFG by creating new value-added products based on the needs of our customers. There is a compression of time and we need to come out with new and innovative products quickly with benefits that are quantifiable for our customers.

Q. I assume you knew Jim Collin. How do you feel about taking on his responsibilities? 
Jim Collin and I have been very good friends for about 20 years. He was my neighbor and he was the one who recommended me for my marketing position. Working with him was a direct benefit. We accomplished better research and cooperation with field operations. Since we have combined the sales and marketing departments, I have seen a renewal of a commitment to work together. More marketing time is spent in the field. We have a new call report system on Lotus Notes reports, which purchasing trends, customer requirements and market share information is put in a database, so we’re more agile in responding to customer needs. There is a stronger relationship with customers and an understanding of what we need to be doing in the market place. There is a very positive feeling that we are working as one group.

Q. What are your goals for this new department?
We are concentrating on using regional management strategically rather than tactically. We need to use them more actively as we develop long range plans. We just finished two significant training programs for our entire North American sales force—one centered on selling and presentation skills and the other was a seminar on our technology and new product development. We believe we are ready to move aggressively in providing customers the products and services they need to grow.
