WDMA Door Standard Gains ANSI Approval
The Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) has received approval on I.S. 6, the Industry Standard for Architectural Stile and Rail Doors from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The standard contains specifications for the manufacture of wood stile and rail doors in commercial interior applications and establishes quality levels for its grades, finishes and construction. In addition, it promotes the use of architectural stile and rail doors in public and private buildings, outlining general requirements for construction, dimensions, acceptable materials and classifications.
WDMA president Alan J. Campbell said the ANSI approval of this standard should prove a benefit to both manufacturers and installers. “A standard with ANSI approval is recognized in the marketplace, and contributes to the manufacture of high-quality fenestration products,” he said.
ICC Code Hearings to be Available via Internet
Those interested in the International Code Council (ICC) Code Development Hearings, which will take place April 8-19, 2002, in Pittsburgh, can now log onto the ICC website, www.intlcode.org/springinfo.htm, to witness the hearings broadcasted live on the Internet.
“Broadcasting the hearings on the Internet provides access to the largest number of people possible at virtually no cost. With today’s technology, stakeholders can be part of the code development process from virtually anywhere,” said Building Officials and Code Administrators International Inc. (BOCA) vice president of codes and standards Mike Pfeiffer.
Minimum specifications for viewing the hearings are an Internet connection, sound card and Microsoft Windows Media Player.
The ICC’s upcoming meeting will consider proposed revisions to the current code via public development hearings.
New Standard Established for Exit Devices, Locks and Alarms Performance
The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) has announced the new ANSI/BHMA A156.29 Standard for Exit Locks [and] Exit Locks with Exit Alarms. According to the BHMA, the standard was approved by ANSI on November 20, 2001.
The standard, which incorporates revisions of parts of A156.5 Auxiliary Locks, is said to be a “spin off” from A156.5 “in recognition of the increased importance of locks, alarms and other devices that control egress from a building,” stated a BHMA news release.
“The performance of the apparently contradictory functions of allowing for rapid egress while thwarting unlawful intrusion requires locks, alarms and other devices specifically designed for these purposes,” said Mike Tierney, BHMA standards coordinator. “Heightened interest in security and safety has spurred the recognition and adoption of a separate standard for these product categories.”
According to BHMA, revisions include increased performance requirements with respect to the recommended tests, and a slam test not part of the earlier standards has been added. Testing of products in accordance with this standard allows for certification to the ANSI/BHMA standard to be established by third-party testing laboratories, according to BHMA.
ASTM International will be sponsoring a one-day technical and professional training course titled “Measuring of Residual Stresses in Glass Products.”
To be held April 23, 2002, at ASTM International Headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa., and August 13 in Detroit, the course will address topics such as principles of stress measurement in glass products.
