        Bystronic Inc. continues its growth and expansion in the United States

Thirty-one isn’t a very large number—except when it represents years, then it takes on new significance. Thirty-one years is exactly how long it took from the time Bystronic Inc. sold its first machine in the United States to the opening of its impressive new facility in Hauppauge, N.Y. The flat glass and metal machinery manufacturer held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 22 for approximately 200 customers, suppliers and guests. Also present were Suffolk County executive Robert J. Gaffney and Hans-Peter Willy, the consulate general of Switzerland in New York.

A number of the company’s partners who provide value-added services also held demonstrations during the event.

The sleek building is a modern European design that offers 67,000 square feet of space, which will house sales, service, training, parts sales and administration for the Swiss processing-equipment maker. Nearly half of the building has been made into “showroom” space, dedicated to helping the customer see the machines and learn about them while they actually operate. Bystronic also has training centers and showrooms located in Chicago and Los Angeles, and product centers in Greenville, S.C., and Mexico City.

“I want to extend my sincerest thanks to all of you,” said Rick Troesch, president of Bystronic Inc., as he addressed customers. “Without the long-term relationship between us, this building would not have been necessary. Some of our relationships go back a quarter of a century!”

Troesch also thanked many suppliers that worked on the project including Floral Glass & Mirror of Hauppauge, which supplied the architectural glass; Depp Glass of Long Island City, supplier of the glass stairway lobby and provider of key design input; Colonial Glass & Mirror of Brooklyn, supplier of the glass balcony railing; and Service Metal Fab of Rockaway, N.J., which did the steel work.
The new building is just one in a long line of testaments to the rapid growth of the company, which opened its first office here in 1980 (see timeline below). Today, the company has more than 1,600 employees worldwide. Its 50,000 square foot former headquarters, also in Hauppauge, will now serve as an expanded manufacturing and logistics center with expanded manufacturing capacity. Today, nearly a quarter of a century after its incorporation in New York, Bystronic Inc. plans to continue its growth as the “single source” supplier of components and machinery manufacturer even further. Also in recent news, Bystronic has acquired Singapore-based AFM-Fabtek, and will now be responsible for marketing, sales and customer support of AFM-Fabtek products throughout North America. According to Bystronic, the addition of AFM-Fabtek products enables it to provide more complete metal processing solutions to meet customer needs.

Bystronic through the years:
1964: Bystronic is founded to develop, build and sell flat glass processing equipment.

1971: Bystronic sells the first machine in North America, a tilt cutting table.

1974: Bystronic launches the first CNC glass cutting machine, Model XY-74, a high-speed machine suitable for float lines or high-volume off-line applications.

1975: Bystronic introduces the first CNC glass cutting machine for glass fabricators, Model XYZ-75VA.

1978: Bystronic Inc. is incorporated in the state of New York as a subsidiary
of Bystronic AG, Switzerland, to serve North America.

1987: Bystronic completes the first comprehensive system of machinery for a float line cold end.

1988: Bystronic launches the CNC waterjet cutting machine, permitting unlimited applications.

1990: Bystronic acquires majority ownership of Lenhardt Maschinenbau, a leading manufacturer of insulating glass production machinery.

1992: Bystronic Inc. completes expansion of North American Headquarters
facility in Hauppauge, NY.

1994: Part of the share capital transferred to Conzzeta Holding, formerly ZZ Holding. All of Bystronic’s ownership is now in neutral, non-glass manufacturing related hands.
Bystronic Maschinen AG and Bystronic Laser AG, receive ISO 9001 certification.

1995: Lenhardt Maschinenbau GmbH receives ISO 9001 certification. The Lenhardt division introduces the revolutionary TPS thermoplastic “warm edge” spacer, a fully automatic, versatile and simple CN controlled insulating glass manufacturing process.

1996: Bystronic introduces a new generation of ultra fast, high precision CNC equipment. Process machinery for every flat glass application is equipped with all AC direct drives and features an openCNC concept with Windows 95 operator interface.

1999: Bystronic Inc. receives ISO 9001 certification. Every one of the Bystronic group’s facilities is now ISO 9001 certified.

2000: LAMICUT, a fully automatic cutting machine for laminated glass, is introduced.

2001: Bystronic Mexico SA de CV is founded.

2002: New North American headquarters inaugurated. 

TODAY: Bystronic is a multi-national, hi-tech manufacturer, with over 1,600 employees worldwide.

SMF: Bystronic’s Shape-Cutting Machine
SMF
The SMF, Bystronic’s newest generation of shape-cutting machines, is designed for fast and precise cutting of a variety of complex shapes. One of the most important features of this machine is its modular design, which enables existing lines to expand as needed into fully automatic cutting lines with loading, breaking and sorting systems.

Other design features of the machine include reinforced profiles from the vibration-free machine chassis; a cutting bridge and cutting head driven by AC-servo-motors by means of pinion gears directly on the racks—gear boxes that adversely affect the accuracy of cutting, as well as high-maintenance oil baths, have been avoided; automatic glass positioning over air cushions by means of pneumatically activated stops; an automatic, precisely adjustable cutting oil feed; and more.
The loading system features a consistent modular system design for the application of loading systems with various designs; stationary and mobile hydraulic loading units; drive and control systems for short cycle times; and more.

For the breaking station, Bystronic says both simple manual breaking and tilt tables are available, as well as complete systems for fully automatic break-out of X-, Y- and Z-trim cuts. And, for the automatic sorting system, the company guarantees innovative, fully automatic production lines. 

One Machine for Multiple Jobs

The KSBM-PSM-PBM cutting, breaking, grinding and drilling machine in compact design is another offering from Bystronic. 

Designed for high-quality shaped automotive glass, the combined CNC cutting, breaking, grinding and drilling machine ensures economical production of precisely shaped glass for long and short runs, according to the company. Likewise, the modular concept makes it possible to use the compact cell both as a stand-alone machine and as an integral part of a high-performance production line. 

Cut, Break and Grind Small Sidelites
VSM
Also available from Bystronic is the VSM-KSM-PSM, which is designed for cutting, breaking and grinding for production of small automotive sidelites.

According to the company, the cutting machine offers rigid and vibration-free chassis for two independent CNC cutting machines; a dynamic, maintenance-free, three-axis direct drive system, combined with hardened and ground guide rails that guarantee high cutting precision and shape accuracy; automatic, speed dependent cutting pressure adjustment for optimal cutting and faultless break-out; a frequency controlled conveyor belt drive with automatic belt tracking correction; continuous cleaning of the belt with a roller brush; and a shape-cutting table with vacuum hold down system.
