Arch to Install Furnace in Dallas

Arch Aluminum & Glass Co. Inc. has announced the upcoming installation of a convention-tempering furnace in its Dallas glass fabrication plant. This new HHH furnace, which will be installed in September for an October 1 start-up, uses true convection technology to produce high-quality, precision heat-treated glass products, especially soft-coat high performance glass. Complementing the tempering system upgrade will be the addition of a spandrel glass manufacturing line.

According to Leon Silverstein, president and corporate executive officer, “This major capital investment demonstrates our commitment to the Dallas market and especially those loyal customers who have worked closely with us in our start-up phase. We look forward to rewarding their loyalty with access to the region’s most advanced tempering system.”

Vitro and AFG Agree To Form Joint Venture; AFG’s Wallin Promoted
Mexican glass maker Vitro S.A. de C.V. and AFG Industries of Kingsport, Tenn., have signed a definitive agreement to establish a 50/50 joint venture for the float glass production in Mexicali B.C.N., Mexico. The plant is expected to be complete by the end of the fourth quarter of this year.

AFG AFG’s Roger Kennedy and Vitro’s José Domene formalize the agreement.

According to Vitro, the cost of the Mexicali plant will be in the order of $100 million (USD), and will have a production capacity of around 550 metric tons of glass per day. Vitro says it will also serve the growing glass demand in NAFTA.

“The plant’s location will also help us reduce shipping costs to our customers since West Coast demand has historically exceeded supply and we have had to ship glass from the Midwest and East to service our customers,” added Luc Willame, Vitro’s flat glass company president.

FRED WALLIN In other AFG news, Fred Wallin will assume the newly created position of vice president of business development. In this role, Wallin will be responsible for marketing and E-business, and will work with the flat glass division in Brussels to coordinate global activities with sales systems, new product development, customer relationship management, benchmarking and competitive intelligence.
