Recapping Some of this Fall’s Year-End Events
The Wild, Wild West
Taking place September 24-25 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Glass Expo West was packed with more than 2,000 individuals to its annual event. That number includes more than 80 exhibiting companies on hand with the latest products, services and technologies.Whether it was an opportunity to visit “Sin City” or to stay up to date with the industry’s latest, Glass Expo West stayed busy offering attendees everything from education to new products.
Opening ceremonies began with a presentation from USGlass columnist John Baker. He talked to attendees about ways to improve business, from broadening customer bases to building and growing the operation.
Additional seminars were also offered on topics such as measuring and installing bent glass, new energy requirements, self-cleaning/low-maintenance glass and more.
A Friday night cocktail reception was also held in the House of Blues restaurant. This included a performance by Layna the Lady of Illusion, who entertained guests with her “sleight-of-hand” magic.
Texas-Style Trade Show
The Texas glass industry found a meeting point along San Antonio’s Riverwalk, October 2-4 when Glass Texpo ’03 took place at the Adam’s Mark San Antonio Riverwalk Hotel. The event was co-sponsored by the Texas Glass Association (TGA) and USGlass magazine.
A golf tournament on day one served as the event’s official “tee” off.
In addition to the trade show floor, day two included seminars and workshops a cocktail party and casino night.
While walking the show, attendees visited with a number of companies that call Texas home including Craftsman Fabricated Glass Inc., Glass Doctor, United States Aluminum and Vistawall. But it wasn’t just Texans that exhibited; others came from Georgia, such as AFGD and YKK; Calgary, Thermal Express Systems; and Portland, Ore., GTS Services LLC just to list a few.
During the TGA awards breakfast, sponsored by AFGD, John Linhardt with Craftsman Fabricated Glass was honored with the Glass Professional of the Year award.
A schedule of seminars and workshops was also included as part of the three-day event. Topics included hurricane glazing, sales and marketing for the glass industry, dealing with problem employees, new glass products, trends in specialty glass and more.
Get “Wind” of This One
For its ten-year anniversary, Glass Expo Midwest blew into Lisle, Ill., (a Chicago suburb) October 16-17. The event was held at the Wyndham Lisle Hotel. Those attending not only enjoyed exhibits, seminars and a tradeshow, but also a special anniversary bash. Glass Expo Midwest was co-sponsored by USGlass, the Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin Glass Associations, the Detroit Glass Dealers Association and the Association of Glazing Contractors.
Getting the show off to its start were seminars and workshops. Michael Swanberg, with Chicago-based MTH Industries, was the first architectural glass speaker. He provided insight into the state of the contract glazing business.
The next speaker in the architectural glass category was YKK AP’s Doug Penn who talked about architectural aluminum finishes.
Mark Kearns with Dlubak Corp. lead another architectural glass presentation titled “Straight Talk About Curved Glass and Aluminum.”
Other seminar topics for the architectural glass industry included: mirror installations, lead by Bob Cline of Gunther Mirror Mastics; and shower door installations from C.R. Laurence Co.’s (CRL) Paul Daniels.
Focusing on sales and marketing, Carl Tompkins of the Sika Corp. told attendees how they could “turn fear into fun” when it comes to selling. In the same category, USGlass columnist John Baker with the Sandler Sales Institute lead “Sales and Marketing for Glass Shops.”
Several presentations and demonstrations for the auto glass industry were included as well.
But all work and no play at a trade show is just … well, there’s just no such thing. So a number of social activities were on the event’s agenda as well. A cocktail party, sponsored by Gunther Mirror mastics, was held on the show floor the first evening. It was followed by Glass Expo Midwest’s ten-year anniversary celebration. During the dinner Glass and Metal Hall of Fame inductees from the past ten years were recognized. Jim Johnson of Sommer & Maca and Carl Jolliff of Jolliff Glass attended, representing those previously inducted. But the fun didn’t end there, because what’s a party without singing and dancing? Guests were invited to dance, dance, dance, while USGlass marketing director Holly (Carter) Biller provided entertainment, singing such songs as “Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones and “Proud Mary” by Credence Clearwater Revival. She also did a duet of “That’s what Friends are For” with Jack Hornsey from Winco Window Co.
The Big East
Just a quick train ride from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan in Hauppauge, N.Y., Glass Expo Northeast brought the glass industry’s latest to those in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Eastern Pennsylvania and surrounding Northeast areas. The event took place November 20-21 at the Wyndham Wind Watch Hotel. Glass Expo Northeast was co-sponsored by USGlass magazine, the Long Island Glass Association and the New York State Glass Association.
Starting off the event, the first day ncluded seminars, workshops, a tour of Bystronic, trade show and reception. Show floor traffic on day one was heavy as attendees visited with companies.
Several seminars were scheduled as well. Sessions were well attended with few empty seats. The following is a listing of the architectural glass sessions:

• New Hurricane Glazing Require-ments: Part I ~ What you need to know before you bid on a project that requires impact-resistant glazing, Doug Penn, YKK AP;
• New Hurricane Glazing Require-ments: Part II ~ Hurricane Glass 101;
• Thermal Barrier and Warm Edge • Technology for Architectural Glass Applications, Mike Gainey, AZON USA;
• Advance Mirror Installation Prob-lems, Chris Palmer-Ball, Palmer Mirro-Mastics; and
• New and Innovative Developments in Heavy Shower Door Installations (demonstration), Paul Daniels, CRL.
A number of other presentations focusing on general business, sales and marketing and auto glass also took place.
Those taking part in Glass Expo Northeast also had the opportunity to visit the U.S. operations of Bystronic. Participants were able to view Bystronic’s edge-deleting, shape-cutting and automotive glass grinding machines, as well as show rooms, training facilities and a multi-million-dollar spare parts inventory.
Providing a bit of insight in an entertaining manner, USGlass columnist Lyle Hill of MTH Industries was the keynote speaker during a luncheon sponsored by CRL. After his New Jersey bashing in the July 2004 USGlass, three New Jersey natives humorously picketed Hill’s presence at the show.
