Building a Future
   Education and Technology for the Glazing Industry

by Ashley M. Charest

With continuous improvements and changes in the contract glazing industry, the Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) division of the Glass Association of North America (GANA) is focused on providing the most reliable and up-to-date technical and educational information available. The association’s commitment to education is evident in the seminars and technical resources it offers. The GANA Glazing Manual, Sealant Manual and the Fabrication, Erection and Glazing Hours Manual are excellent technical resources.

Written Words
The GANA Glazing Manual, often called the “industry bible,” is recognized as the definitive source in the glass and glazing field and includes comprehensive information about primary and fabricated glass products, quality standards, design considerations, general and specific glazing guidelines and glazing in hazardous locations. The 2004 edition addresses changes in building code requirements and introduces new technology and performance standards available in high-performance glazing.

The GANA Sealant Manual covers general information on the common types of sealants available, along with the preparation for using sealants on a project and the potential causes of sealant failure. The manual also provides graphs, tables and charts for effective use of the product.

The GANA Fabrication, Erection and Glazing Hours Manual provides information on fabrication, installation and glazing of a variety of systems, including flush-glazed, seamless window, core, can-stick, structural glazing, pressure walls and entrances. The manual also provides reference charts for conversions, hardware finishes and coverage charts, just to name a few.

In order to continue the advancement of the contract glazing industry, the BEC division of GANA has created a technical committee, which oversees all of the division’s technical activities. At this time, the committee is focusing on the creation of the following:
• The Project Managers Reference Manual;
• A bulletin on critical elements of successful shop drawings; and
• An industry contract qualification document.

Learning Opportunities
The GANA Blueprint Reading and Labor Estimating Course was revamped completely in 2003 and now is available. This correspondence course is designed for beginning estimators in the contract glazing business. It is intended to provide the beginner with many of the basic facts about the materials used, as well as a basic systematic approach to estimating metal, glass and labor. To date, more than 100 students have registered for the updated course in a six-month period of time. This course could help make your new employees and your company successful in the industry.

In addition to technical resources, the BEC division has sponsored the Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) Conference™ since 1998. Be sure to mark your calendar for the eighth annual BEC Conference, to be held February 20-22, 2005, at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

The BEC division also holds a separate educational conference each year, the Contract Glazing Educational Conference™ (formerly known as the Project Managers Educational Conference™). This event allows your project managers, estimators, operation managers and sales force to interact with their peers and also gain valuable information from those experienced in the industry. In addition to group discussions, interactive educational sessions and brainstorming activities, attendees also tour a local industry facility. Tours of glass fabrication plants, aluminum and metal facilities and float glass plants provide attendees with an opportunity to step inside the operations of some of their suppliers. Past tour hosts include Viracon, Vistawall, Guardian Industries Corp. and Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc. This unique opportunity will next take place May 13-15, 2004, at the Wyndham Minneapolis Airport Hotel in Minneapolis.
