ANSI Z97 Standard Nears Completion
After nearly nine years of discussions and debates the ANSI Z97.1 safety glazing standard is expected to be available later this year. The standard and its supporting materials have been submitted to ANSI for review and acceptance. Once accepted, all documentation will be audited to ensure procedures were followed. Once that is complete the standard will be published and made available.

Upon publication the standard will be dormant for five years, though the steering committee will still remain active.

Furor over Steel Prices Continues
Steel prices continue to escalate with serious implications for glazing contractors. Prices have increased as much as 30 percent over the past few months. The price of steel scrap has grown 69 percent during the past year, and contractors are seeing the increases in everything from equipment to nails.

The most commonly-cited cause of the steel prices? An incredible increase in demand-from China. Chinese consumption of steel increased 12 percent in 2003. The International Steel and Iron Association estimates China will consume 31 percent of the world’s total steel demand this year.
