Viracon Announces Sales Appointments
Viracon of Owatonna, Minn., has announced several sales management personnel changes. Brad Austin, senior vice president, said the changes will help the company better focus on and execute strategic initiatives for the current fiscal year and beyond. 

Ron McCann, formerly director of sales, Eastern region, is now director of sales for national window and specialty accounts. Bob Randall, who has been director of sales, Western region, will replace McCann in the East. Garret Henson will be taking on the responsibility of the Western region, and will also continue in his current role as director of international sales.

The new international business manager is Joe Effertz, who previously served as a mountain states region field sales rep. He is now working with the Asia Pacific operations.

In addition, Pat McDermott and Jill Sawyer are new customer service managers for the Western region and Eastern region respectfully. 

Viracon also announced several additions to its field sales team. 

Mitch McQueen has joined the company as a field sales representative for Eastern South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Northern Florida. McQueen has more than 15 years experience in the glazing industry, holding sales and management positions in the Southeastern United States with Kawneer and U.S. Aluminum.

Bill Zientarski is a new field sales representative for Illinois and Northeastern Indiana. Zientarski has nine years of experience in the glass industry, most recently as an account manager for Oldcastle Glass. 

Paul Homer joins Viracon as field sales representative for Virginia and North Carolina, excluding Charlotte. He was worked in the region for the past four years for Interpane. Homer replaces Mike Willinganz who relocated to Viracon’s main offices in Minnesota.

Cameron Scripture is now the field sales representative for the mountain states region, replacing Joe Effertz. His sales territory includes Colorado, Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

FTI Names Kimber Tracy VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development
Film Technologies International Inc. (FTI) of St. Petersburg, Fla., has announced that Kimber Tracy has joined the company, and will serve as the new vice president of sales, marketing and business development. She has more than 25 years experience in the window film industry.

Tracy has owned and operated application businesses and multiple distribution operations in both the United States and Europe. Most recently she served as FTI’s managing director of European operations.

Vezdos Named Basco’s VP Strategic Development
Tom Vezdos
has been named to the recently created position of vice president, strategic development for Basco. The appointment was made by George Rohde, president.

Prior to joining the company Vezdos served as a partner and project manager at Midwest Manufacturing Solutions. He also worked in engineering and operations for Ford Motor Co.

Mroz Promoted to Regional VP for Harmon Inc.
Jim Mroz has been promoted to the position of regional vice president for Harmon Inc.’s offices in Atlanta, Chicago and Lombard, Ill., Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and South Bend, Ind. He will be overseeing a team of 300 that includes, sales, office, fabrication and field staff.

Mroz has been with Harmon for 18 years, joining as a project manager. He also served as general manager for the company’s Indiana office for five years prior to his promotion to regional general manager.

In addition, Bob Mulligan has been named as senior project manager for Harmon Inc.’s Orlando, Fla., office. Mulligan brings 34 years of experience in project management, sales and estimating for the glazing industry. Prior to joining Harmon, Mulligan had worked for Permasteelisa Cladding Technologies, Salem Glass Co., PPG Industries’ Commercial Construction Group, as well as his own business, Emerald Glass Co.

In Chicago, Andrew (Drew) Ryan has joined Harmon’s sales team. He has more than ten years of sales experience, and previously owned and managed Illinois-based Shipping and Forwarding Inc. He also worked for Enterprise Mortgage Corp. as a mortgage broker.

AEC Honors Outstanding Volunteers
During the Aluminum Extruder Council’s (AEC) 55th annual meeting held in March, two volunteers were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the council. Richard L. Gaugler, AEC chairman in 1974, was presented with the Council’s Distinguished Service Award. 

Also during the annual meeting, Christopher Jowett of Alcan International was presented with the 2004 Volunteer of the Year Award. 

An active member of the council’s die committee, Jowett has been involved with the programs of many AEC educational seminars and workshops over the years. 

Bottero Announces 2003 Sales Award Winners
Bottero Flat Glass Inc. has presented two sales achievement awards for 2003.

David Mackey, Eastern United States sales manager, received the Annual Salesperson of the Year Award and Marc Prevost, president of MPM, received the Annual Sales Achievement Award.

Mackey, who is based in North Carolina, has more than 17 years of sales and management experience in the glass industry. He works directly with customers in designing automated glass cutting systems, edge fabrication lines, as well as beveling, drilling and CNC milling equipment.

Marc Prevost has 15 years of experience in glass machinery sales. MPM provides machinery for IG manufacturing, tempering, laminating and other glass fabrication processes such as edging, beveling, drilling and CNC machining. The company also provides equipment service and tools such as diamond and polishing wheels, drills and more.

Hershberger Named President of PGT Industries
Rod Hershberger has been named president and chief operating officer (COO) of PGT Industries. Previously he served as executive vice president and COO.

Hershberger has been with the company for 23 years.

“Rod is a leader in our industry,” said Randy White, the company’s previous president who will remain as the company’s chief executive officer. “Rod’s new role recognizes his ability to design a winning corporate culture as well as winning products.”

Morse Announces New Director of National Sales
Robert Daniel is the new director of national sales for Morse Industries of Kent, Wash. He has previous experience in sales team management and a track record of sales growth.

In his new role he will lead outside sales executives and inside customer support staff in providing service and delivery to glass and mirror companies. 

A Minute With....Steve Abadi

Steve Abadi, chairman of Innovative Glass Corp. (IGC) in Jericho, N.Y., recently acquired a non-exclusive license from Research Frontiers Inc. to manufacture and sell SPD-Smart™ windows, doors and skylights in North America. IGC has also launched its EGlass™ product lines, which can electronically tint, shade and give privacy by touching a button. 

Q: How long has your company been in operation?
A: IGC is a new company that was formed in the fall of 2003. Although IGC is only several months old, it is actually the successor to Abadi/Hollander Corp., formed 20 years ago, which was dedicated to the development and marketing of liquid crystal window shades.

Q: How did you enter into this relationship with Research Frontiers?
A: My relationship with Research Frontiers actually began 15 years ago, when my partner and I met Bob Saxe, the founder, inventor and creator of Research Frontiers. 
We were marketing intellectual property related to liquid crystal window shades, and we wanted to include the SPD Smatglass technology in our portfolio. We believed the technologies were complimentary and synergistic, however SPD was still in its infancy, and not ready for prime time. We all agreed that a fit might be appropriate at a later date. 

In June, 2003, I rekindled my relationship. We negotiated a license to manufacture and market a variety of architectural glass products.

Q: What question about the product are you most often asked?
A: “Can the E GLASS technology be retrofitted onto an existing window or skylight without replacing the glass?” The answer is that it technically can be done, but we don’t believe it is presently a cost-effective alternative.

Q: What are your personal goals for this product?
A: My personal goals for E Glass are to have it integrated into windows, doors and skylights at the OEM level, and have the consumer or architect ask for it by name. I would like to see E Glass revolutionize the glass, window and skylight industry the way digital cameras and photography have taken over the film industry—totally electronic, with no moving parts to break down or wear out.
