Arch Aluminum & Glass to Undergo Major Extrusion Expansion
Arch Aluminum & Glass Co. Inc. will expand its extrusion operations in Miami over the next 12 to 14 months with the addition of a second extrusion line, expanded finishing capability and 70,000 square feet of manufacturing space.
The company says it will be installing new equipment, including one of the largest extrusion presses in Florida. The press will be manufactured by Clecim, part of the Siemens VAI group and will be designed and built in VAI CLECIM’s workshops in Montbrison, France to the ISO 9000 standard. Designed to run with either 8- or 9-inch billet, the 2,750 US ton press features Clecim’s front loading design.

“This state-of-the-art expansion gives us the capabilities and increased capacity that will allow us to provide even more services directly to our customers with increased levels of service and support. We truly believe that it is our duty to provide the best possible quality and “one to one” service to our customers,” said Michael E. Rodriguez, Arch extrusion general manager.

The expansion of the Miami plant will include more than 70,000 square feet of new manufacturing space and will almost triple the current extrusion production capacity. The additional square footage will house the new fully-automated anodizing line, designed and manufactured by Italtecno of Modena, Italy, that is capable of finishing profiles to more than 26 feet in length. The environmentally-sensitive design will feature chrome-free chemistry, a waste-water treatment facility and the Freeal sulfuric acid recovery system.

GPD Redesigns glassfiles.com to be User Friendly and Flexible
The organizing committee of Glass Processing Days (GPD) has redesigned its website, www.glassfiles.com, to enhance user friendliness, information and offer flexible updates. According to organizers, the design is part of the GPD mission to collect and distribute educational information on the properties, processing and use of architectural and automotive glass, and also to encourage cross-functional networking.

Among the changes to the site is the elimination of the drop-down menu. Organizers say this was removed to make it easier for visitors to “perceive the structure of the versatile and extensive information provided on the site and to facilitate the finding of the information most relevant to the site visitor.”

The site’s log-in procedure is also different. Users are now authenticated based on e-mail address and password, eliminating the need for a separate user name. Users can also log in permanently, so they are automatically authenticated on the same computer.

“Glassfiles.com, the concept we launched in 2001, is an important part of our concept and mission to support continued learning within the industry,” said Jorma Vitkala, chairperson of the GPD organizing committee. “It is important to improve and modernize the site continuously to reflect the developments within the industry as they are documented at GPD conferences and in the time period between them.”
