Though glasstec may have come and gone until 2006, you can still learn about some of the new technologies that the trade fair offered. In this section we’ve compiled a sampling of some of the products that were in Düsseldorf.
Tamglass: Solutions for Bending, Tempering and Laminating
From Tampere, Finland, Tamglass offered several equipment lines for the glass fabricating industry.
For example, the new CBTS ShapeMax combines convection and radiation heating with a patented, quick-heating section. The new line is designed to accommodate the needs of fabricators who produce curved glass. It can accommodate large glass sizes and versatile forms. The system also can accommodate glass sizes of up to 60 by 88 inches and has a maximum bending depth of 14 inches in complex and cylindrical shapes.
Tamglass also introduced the ProL™ laminating line series, which can handle glass sizes up to 104 by 240 inches; thick laminates, up to 3.2 inches. It has a capacity range from 32 to 80 inches m2/8h, has super low-E capability with the Tamglass heating technology and offers flexibility in glass and PVB handling.

Applied Films: Rotatable Cathodes for Thin Film Deposition
Rotatable Cathodes for thin film deposition equipment were new from Applied Films. According to the company, rotatable cathodes offer better material utilization and flexibility, compared to standard planar cathodes, and are a cost reduction for owners.
The equipment, designed for transparent and solar low-E coatings, consists of multiple compartments that are consecutively arranged. The company says this modularity allows the machine to produce a variety of glass types for different applications. Material and thickness variations of the metallized layer stacks allow coatings to be adjusted by color and function for specific requirements.

Model FSB on Display at Billco
Billco of Zelienople, Pa., was promoting its Model FSB, a multiple rack-glass storage and crane loading system.
The rack can accommodate various styles and widths of glass with its flexible equipment design and allows for glass retrieval from a storage rack in a building bay that is separate from the loading and cutting machine bay. The system can retrieve all types of glass, including soft-coat, low-E products, and can retrieve from single-side or double-sided racks.
The company says the system can interface with a Billco CNC/XYZ cutting machine or as a stand-alone system for loading glass onto any manufacturers’ cutting line.

Salem Offers Several New Lines for Numerous Operations
Based in Winston-Salem, N.C., Salem Distributing exhibited at glasstec representing a number of Italian companies, including CMS TeconoMetal, Bovone and Mistral. Equipment lines were available for operations including cutting, edging, beveling, etching and more.
From CMS TecnoMetal, Salem offered the BOB multi-tasking center. The NC center is capable of edging, beveling, milling, drilling and engraving with automatic tool exchange. The line also features a thin glass beveling process and opposed head drilling for clean through holes and efficient production times.
Also available from CMS TecnoMetal is the TL 3.70S CNC cutting table. The traversal movement of the cutting head and longitudinal movement are on running guides in circular sections and formed wheels. The tilting mechanism is controlled hydraulically and the table has one longitudinal and two transversal breakout bars. The table features a patented system of four cutting heads that can use a variety of cutting tools with an automatic setting for glass thickness. Scoring pressure is also set automatically depending upon the head in use. In this way different thicknesses of glass and various types of glass can be cut, such as straight or shape cuts.
From Bovone is the ELB 10/45 straight-line edging/miter machine. According to company information, this ten-spindle machine is designed to produce flat edge profiles with seams and mitres. It can also polish either the flat or the mitre with cerium oxide.
The Mini Maxi-371/CNC is Bovone’s computer-controlled version of its Mini-Maxi straight-line beveler series. The beveler is programmed by a computer that sets the machine automatically to produce accurate bevels. The line has three felt polishing wheels, seven beveling wheels and one pencil-edging wheel.
The Bovone transloader is available, as well, for transferring glass from one machine, such as a beveler or edger, to another automatically. The company says the transloader connects the two machines and will remove glass from the exit conveyor and position it on the entrance conveyor of the other machine.
For sandblasting flat glass, Salem offers the automatic/manual sandblasting unit, the Mistral 200 from Mistral. The automatic mode is controlled from a panel keyboard and display. The program can set and adjust the stroke and the speed of the automatic blasting gun robotic arm and the distance and speed of glass travel.

DGES Saves Planning Time
Dorma Glass Estimating Software (DGES) from Dorma Glas is a new software package that has been developed in close collaboration with users. The company says the software enables preparation of designs and calculations quickly, reliably and professionally.
DGES processes data and produces documents such as dimensioned technical drawings, parts lists, glass sizes, preparation measures and cost breakdowns.
According to the company, input windows guide users through the program. The package includes a catalog, technical documentation and configurator for order preparation.
It is also designed to allow rapid responses to incoming requests for quotations and low planning costs.

Connection for Stability and Security
Eduard Kronenberg GmbH of Solgingen, Germany, displayed connectors made of a pre-coated material that are ideal for aluminum- and plastic-profiles, according to the company.
For special dimensions and heavy insulating glass systems, the current series 3 connectors are available in hardened and afterwards galvanized carbon steel, according to the company. The connectors ensure stability within the panes, which accommodate the demands of the insulating glass industry.

Qingdao Hengda Industries Offers Vacuum Glass
The Chinese company Qingdao Hengda Industry Corp. was at glasstec displaying just one product, a low-E vacuum insulting glass. According to the company, this glass blocks heat transfer, provides acoustic insulation and anti-dew transparency.
The company says vacuum insulating glass is not an oxymoronic statement: the vacuum is achieved through a series of small capillary tubes placed through the glass. The vacuum insulating glass is also two to three times smaller than insulating glass, making it possible to create thin windows, according to the company.
In addition, low-E vacuum glass equipment is available. Both the Monomer and Continuous production lines have a maximum size of 2000 mm by 1000 mm and a minimum size of 200 mm by 100 mm. The Monomer can produce 3000m2 of glass annually, while the Continuous line can produce 100000m2 of glass annually.

Hegla Introduces the SortJet Sorting System
The SortJet compact sorting system, featuring real-time optimizing software, was a new product introduced by Hegla. The company says the system is designed to bring the glass in the correct production sequence for the IG line after the breakout station.
According to information from the company, the SortJet helps eliminate problems associated with manual loading of harp racks. With this new sorting system, the operator or robot takes the glass from the breakout station and places it onto the SortJet’s loading station. For pattern and coated glass a light indicates on which side the glass should be placed on the loading station or by interfacing for robotic loading. The lite is then stored in the appropriate slot on the sorter.
The software, according to Tom Bechill, U.S. sales manager, co-ordinates cutting and sorting to allow harp racks to be filled completely at one time, reducing material handling. In addition, the real-time-optimizing software can allow rush orders and urgent remakes to be inserted into the current schedule to reduce additional handling.

Albat+Wirsam Software Helps Manage Racks and More
Albat+Wirsam Software showed its newest product, a rack tracking software system called AWRack. The software addresses the problem of frequent transport rack replacement because it allows management of racks while integrating customers in the booking process.
A registered barcode shows the rack’s destination when it is loaded, and customers can monitor an order through Internet access.
Also on display was the Xopton cutting control station. This allows the real-time cutting of residue plates along with the ongoing cutting process. Users can revise, break up, unite, link and reoptimise existing optimizations.

Uvekol Technology Showcased by Surface Specialties UCB
Surface Specialties UCB, a part of the Belgium-based UCB Group, was on hand with its Uvekol technology. The glass laminating system can be used in a variety of applications, including safety, security, sound and design.
When used in security applications, for example, the company says Uvekol can mitigate forced-entry threats and can resist bullet penetration from medium to high power arms.
The technology of the lamination is helpful for coatings on compact discs, optical fibers, automotive parts, electronic applications and various printing inks. The products are solvent-free and delivered as ready-to-use liquid.

No More Fingerprints With Nanotechnology
Nanogate Coating Systems GMHB was getting attention with its Nanotechnology, which eliminates the worry of optic-tattering fingerprints on frosted surfaces.
Nanogate’s anti-finger coating allows stains to be removed
with standard cleaners or solvents, if needed, according to company literature.
Chemical nanotechnology delivers a strong surface when millions of nanoparticles become stringed together. The coating process occurs after the material is applied to the glass surface and non-sticking materials migrate into the air. Nanoparticles create hardness and chemical resistance. Sticking compounds form a chemical bonding to the glass surface.
In addition, Nano-E2C has been developed as a polishing system and can be integrated into existing production sequences, according to the company.

Silicone Technology From Dow Corning
Dow Corning showed its full range of silicone products for structural glass sealing applications.
According to the company, structural glazing with stepped-insulating glass units creates a load-bearing, bonding connection to the metal frame structure on the external glass lite. The bonding connection is correctly dimensioned to meet the environmental requirements.
Sealants are also available for structural glazing with symmetric insulating glass units. In this application, the load bearing connection to the metal frame structure is located on the inner glass lite. The insulating glass works to seal the space between the lites and forms a load-bearing bond. It is designed so that any dynamic loads, such as wind pressure or suction, are transferred to the inner lite by the insulating glazing seal.

Compartment Coating System by Vacuum Coating Technologies
Vacuum Coating Technologies Inc. unveiled its newest product called VAC™870 compartment coating system. The system creates coatings with precisely designed colors and carefully controlled specifications for light transmission and reflection.

Fantasy Glass Is Not Plain
Industria Vibaltda of Columbia, showed its mysteriously named “Fantasy Glass,” which displays subtle transparencies. The company says it is ideal for drawers, shower cabinets, wardrobes and the fronting of cupboards, according to the company.
The glass features a satin finish on both sides, yet maintains all the properties of plain glass. The glass was designed to be easy to clean and to resist scratches, stains, deterioration and weather damage.
Stewart Engineers Showcases AcuraCoat™
The AcuraCoat™ online chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system was the main attraction at the Flat Rock, Mich.-based Stewart Engineers stand. The turnkey online CVD coating technology is capable of producing reflective, low-E, solar-E and self-clean (low-maintenance) coatings, according to the company. The system can be designed for either a new or an existing float glass manufacturing facility.

Tailor-Made Sealants From Henkel Teroson
The security of a strong bond is the motto for Henkel Teroson’s sealants for primary and secondary seals and warm edge technology. The insulating glass sealants by this German company are used with spacer profiles made of aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel or plastics. Sealants for a primary seal, which act as a water barrier, also aid in assembly during production.
The company’s sealant for warm edge technology is a polyisobutylene-based product called the organic ThermoPlasticSpacer (TPS®).
For secondary seals, the company offers its Terostat-998 R product line. Terostat-998 RS may be used for special requirements of insulating glass systems with an organic TPS. For the production of complex multifunctional insulating glass units, it offers a range of sealant systems with specific final characteristics for all kind of units.

Ritec’s Revolving Revolution
Ritec International made an appearance with the display of ClearShield Revolution™, the company’s latest application machine. It provides a practical and cost-effective process for high productivity while remaining space efficient, according to company literature. The Revolution Carousel™ is a semi-automatic machine that helps convert high-maintenance, unprotected glass into low-maintenance glass. The machine uses a simple and patented circular process that operates like a revolving door. An open quadrant at the front of the machine creates an entry workspace where all the operations are performed, while the remaining three quadrants create drying and curing chambers.
“The Revolution is the latest addition to our range of application machinery and is a practical, yet cost-effective way, of increasing productivity while also being extremely floor space efficient,” said Stephen Byers, managing director.

Horizontal Tempering Products from MAPPI
Mappi Italian Glass Technology highlighted its new horizontal tempering products.
AU from Mappi is a tempering line with a range of optional equipment. It was designed to suit every plant configuration and production tempering need, according to the company.
The Fox machine is a series that covers small to medium tempering requirements, and is also available in different dimensions.
The Tutan machine offers benefits of a traditional line combined with GHBS convection technology. It can accommodate large manufacturers with high quality and large piece requirements.

Solaris Glass Blocks by Saint-Gobain
According to Saint-Gobain, the popularity of glass blocks is making a comeback in areas of Germany where people have used its Solaris glass blocks. The products include colored, special-purpose and traditional, transparent glass blocks. The special purpose elements include 45-degree curved blocks as well as corner blocks with customized angles and reinforced glass pavers.
Glass blocks offer light effects and, according to the company, are ideal for kitchens and bathrooms because they guard against scratches and acids. Almost all Solaris glass blocks meet G 30 and G 60 fire protection requirements. The company adds that the blocks can also be used to prevent intrusion as they have a high resistance to penetration by projectiles and noise dampening.

Glaverbel Group Unveils Planibel Coated Glass
Glaverbel Group, the European branch of AGC Flat Glass, revealed its three types of glass that have been developed as a response to thermal insulation regulations.
Planibel® G fasT is a low-E, pyrolitic hard-coated glass that allows fabricators to temper glass efficiently, according to the company. One benefit of this low-E glass is that it can be hardened in any tempering furnace, including radioactive furnaces.
The company also launched its Planibel Energy® NT, which reduces solar energy levels entering buildings in the summer and reduces heat loss during the winter, according to the company. The glass offers benefits such as high levels of light transmission, thermal comfort and lower heating, air-conditioning and electricity costs.
Also on display was Planibel Top NT. This soft-performance, soft-coated, low-E glass is used for sealed units and has a neutral appearance, low reflection levels and a high light transmission rating, according to the company.
