Traco Closes Knoxville Location, Consolidates
Operation in Pennsylvania

Traco, headquartered in Cranberry Township, Pa., will be closing its Johnson City, Tenn., branch later this fall. Denise Abraham, manager of marketing and communications, told USGlass that the closure will impact approximately180 jobs.

Located 100 miles from Knoxville, Tenn., the 150,000-square-foot facility has been dedicated to manufacturing commercial thermal aluminum products. With its closure, the company will be consolidating all operations solely at its headquarters, where additional hourly workers will be added to accommodate the transition.

Abraham stresses that the facility will not close until the company can be assured that customers will not experience any delays or problems with shipments.

“We won’t close that plant until there’s a complete, smooth transition of the product line from there up to this facility [in Pennsylvania], so that it does not impact anything as far as orders are concerned or delays to the customer,” Abraham said.

No specific date for closure has been announced, although due to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which protects workers by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide notification of 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs, it will not be before November 23.

“It’s when everything is moved, it won’t be before November 23, the date that we gave the employees,” Abraham said, adding, “but when it’s moved and things are operational and functional, there will not be a delay.”

Earlier this year, Traco announced the closure of its facility in Bainbridge, Ga. (see April 2009 USGlass, page 18).

Oldcastle Glass Closes D.C.-Area Facility
The Oldcastle Glass® D.C., manufacturing facility located in Warrenton, Va., was scheduled to close at the end of October. All open orders were sent to either the Moorestown, N.J., plant or to Rock Hill, S.C. The closing was not expected to affect deliveries or production.
