PPG Glass Helps Earn New LEED Credit
PPG Industries has announced that all of its architectural glasses and many of its interior and exterior coatings can help building projects earn a new LEED pilot credit established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

LEED pilot credit 43: certified products enables building projects to earn credit when they are constructed with building products that have achieved third-party certification for environmental claims from a USGBC-approved list of existing standards, such as Energy Star®. Among the eligible PPG building products are Cradle-to-Cradle-certified architectural glasses including Solarban™ solar control low-E glasses, Sungate® passive low-E glasses, Oceans of Color® tinted glasses, Starphire® ultra-clear glass, Vistacool® glasses, Earth and Sky performance tints and conventional clear glass.

The DuPont™ SentryGlas® high-performance safety glass interlayer is on a roll: literally. DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions is offering its interlayer in a 35-mil roll form to increase the speed and convenience of laminating safety glass.

SentryGlas® interlayers are now available to laminators in flat sheet form, in thicknesses of 35-, 60-, 90- and 120-mil, and as rolled sheeting, at 35-mil thickness.

Company representatives expect laminators to find handling and productivity advantages when using the rolled interlayer versus flat-stored sheets, leading some laminators to use it in multiple plies to meet thicker interlayer requirements.

Guardian Launches SunGuard Mobile App
Guardian Industries has launched its SunGuard mobile application for use in iPhones, Android devices and iPads. The app allows users to browse and interact with hundreds of projects worldwide. The new app allows users to find real-life examples of how SunGuard products look and perform in the field.

Utilizing smart phone GPS capabilities and a robust photo gallery, users can locate buildings that use SunGuard products nearby, or around the world. The app, created by a cross-team partnership at Guardian and Curve Detroit, provides project details including the SunGuard products used, performance data, a project photo, the architectural firm, glazier, fabricator and more. Users can browse images and double tap on a photo to see details about the project, and even use the map function for walking or driving directions to a project.

Viracon Publishes Bird-Friendly Glass Technical Document
Viracon has published a new technical document titled Bird-Friendly Glass.

In order to understand bird-glass collisions, Viracon has been involved with the American Bird Conservancy, which is studying how silkscreen patterns on glass affect bird collisions. Based on the tests, the researchers learned that horizontal and vertical lines are most effective in decreasing the number of collisions. The results concluded that the effectiveness of all-over patterns increases as the coverage increases and that because silkscreen patterns are found inside insulating units, lower efficacy is expected in situations where the angle of view obscures the pattern.

Viraspan™ design silkscreen patterns maximize “the visual noise” of a building facade by creating distinct differentiations in texture, color and opacity. The company’s silkscreen series offers a variety of lines, dots and other organic shapes. These silkscreen patterns can be combined with low-E coatings to provide optimal energy performance.

While the initial test results were positive, on-going testing is being conducted to determine the effect of alternate silkscreen patterns, colors and low-E coatings.

ApprovalZOOM Provides a Searchable Certified Product Registry
ApprovalZOOM, a construction product approval and certification registry, streamlines and modernizes the search for qualified building construction products—including doors, windows and skylights—on a single website, www.ApprovalZOOM.com. The site was designed as a user-friendly search tool for building product approvals to help the public at large to research and find economical, code-compliant products.

The site is currently in beta testing for the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety as its search engine for the FORTIFIED Programs. Already searchable on the site are products certified and approved by Miami Dade, Florida State Approvals, AAMA, Texas Department of Insurance, ICC and California, with NAMI now in implementation.

Besides being a search registry, owners and authorized representatives of listed approvals can “claim” their listings to edit and add searchable data, social networking features and company information. Paid plans are available that allow owners of qualifying products to add their engineered information to the registry.

Lovati’s New CNC Processes Big Glass
The Zephyr series is the latest addition to Lovati Fratelli’s range of machinery. Zephyr is a 5-axis CNC, equipped with a special head with +/- 90 degree inclination. Zephyr is produced in two versions: Zephyr 32 for processing a maximum glass size of 10.6 by 5.4 feet and Zephyr 42 for a maximum glass size of 13.7 by 7.5 feet.

Vinyl Window Achieves Blast Ratings
The V-100 Series vinyl tilt and turn window from WinDoor Inc. has achieved the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection protocols under the ASTM F 1642-04 and the GSA TS01 testing requirements. The window has achieved GSA’s Performance Criteria 1 and protection level “safe,” with a hazard level of “none.” The ASTM test hazard condition achieved “no break” protection.
The size tested was 48 by 72 inches, and all blast test calculations were performed by a third-party licensed engineer in accordance with UFC requirements.

The window also achieved the R-5 super-insulating standard as stated by National Fenestration Rating Council test labs, with a U-factor of 0.18 and SHGC of 0.05. The V-100 window has design loads of non-impact +130 /-150 and impact qualifications of +100/-130.

BP - Glass Garage Doors Earn Hurricane Impact Approval
The BP Hurricane Line from BP Glass Garage Doors have exceeded the highest standards required by Miami-Dade County’s Building Code Compliance Office Notice of Acceptance 10-0802.02 and Florida Building Code-Product Approval FL 13380.

The glass garage doors are engineered to be impact-resistant and provide high wind structural performance. An optional National Fenestration Rating Council package provides resistance to air infiltration and produces an air- and water-tight seal around the perimeter of the opening. The doors’ patent-pending, fully insulated frame technology and the interior/exterior mounted perimeter weather-strip combine to significantly reduce air infiltration well below the allowable commercial and residential standards.

The hurricane line meets both small and large missile impact testing requirements, with a wind load rating equivalent to 160 mph or 65 psf. It has been approved for use in and out of all high velocity hurricane zones.
