David Draper has been named chief operating officer of Binswanger Glass, and will now oversee the day-to-day operations of Binswanger. Arturo Carrillo, Binswanger’s president and chief executive officer, is leaving the company to join its new owner, Grey Mountain Partners (see page 10 for more). Draper previously had served as director of strategic planning at Robbins LLC (a Grey Mountain Partners affiliate company) and has also held a supervisory role at the Owens Corning OEM Solutions Group for several years.

Viracon in Owatonna, Minn., has a new director of marketing and product management, Kevin Anez. With 19 years of experience in the building materials industry, Anez comes to Viracon from Andersen Window Corp., where he was a product marketing manager. Previously, he was an adjunct professor in marketing at Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis. In addition, the company has promoted Alissa Schmidt to architectural design department manager. Schmidt has worked at Viracon since 2005, most recently as an architectural design associate. In her new role, Schmidt will lead the architectural design department’s focus on providing design assistance to architects.

Direct Metals Co. LLC, a Kennesaw, Ga.-based distributor of specialty metal products, has added to its sales team. Chad Dubiski previously worked as a senior business process consultant for Epicor. Also new is Jorge Reyes, who will quote both custom and stock items of bar grating, perforated metal, wire mesh, expanded metal, safety grating and fiberglass grating.

Shawn Hannux has joined Erdman Automation Corp. as an insulating glass (IG) process specialist and will focus on expanding the Erdman IG equipment applications for commercial and residential operations throughout North America. Most recently, Hannux worked as product sales specialist for Quanex Engineered Products Group’s IG Systems division.

Tom Howhannesian has been promoted to president of Heinaman Contract Glazing. He previously has served as chief financial officer, and as vice president of operations - California and vice president of business development.

Mark Liston has been promoted to president of Glass Doctor, following the resignation of former president Mark Dawson. Liston has been in the role of vice president at Glass Doctor for the past two years and has more than 30 years of franchising management experience. He previously worked for Clockwork Home Services as vice president of sales and marketing and at Valpak as director of new franchise development. Filling the role of vice president of operations is Michael Gai. Gai has been the director of national account services for the past year. Before that, he owned the Glass Doctor of King and Pierce Counties franchise in Seattle for seven years.

Officials at Hartung Glass Industries (HGI) of Seattle have promoted Kirk Johnson to director of sales. He joined the company in September 2011 as regional sales manager. A 16-year veteran of the industry, Johnson has experience in the South and West. Johnson worked with the former Vitro America for more than 10 years and, before that, with Arch Aluminum and Glass for five years.

Lyon Evans Passes Away
Lyon D. Evans of Wausau, Wis., an honorary member of the Architectural Aluminum Manufactures Association (AAMA), passed away on December 8, 2011, at the age of 93.

Evans was born October 31, 1918, in New York. He graduated from Colgate University in 1940 with a degree in architecture.

More than 65 years ago, Lyon helped form and was the key technical member of the then “new association,” AAMA. In 1957, he joined Hope’s Windows of Jamestown, N.Y., and worked there until 1975, when he moved to Wausau. He became vice president of design engineering and research with the former Wausau Metals (now Wausau Window and Wall Systems).

“I am thankful and privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Lyon during my tenure at Wausau Metals,” says Ken Brenden, AAMA technical services manager. “The library of ‘Technical Bulletins’ he wrote between 1976 and 1978 served as the foundation blocks for my fenestration education.”

Lyon was inducted as an AAMA Honorary Member on May 2, 1989.
