AIMCAL Film Committee Completes Testing

The Window Film Committee of the Association of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters and Laminators (AIMCAL) has completed a test of a generic 8-mil film as applied to wired glass and has concluded that, “the retro-fit addition of the safety film to fire-rated glazing systems tested did not have any effect on the performance of the wire glass during fire exposure (see July-August 2002 Window Film page 14 for related story).” 

The purpose of the project was to determine if the presence of a readily available, clear window film installed as a retro-fitted system, would have any effect on the fire endurance of the a piece of ¼-inch-thick fire-rated wire glass, as is commonly used in listings for fire-rated assemblies.

In the testing, a non-bearing concrete wall assembly containing six 36- by 36-inch openings in which there were six fire-rated wire glass specimens in hollow steel frames, was subjected to identical testing procedures. Four of the specimens were covered on either the exposed or unexposed surfaces with plastic safety film. Each specimen met the conditions for the fire exposure as outlined in the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) Method E 2010-01 Standard Test Method for Positive Pressure Fire Tests of Window Assemblies for a period of 45 minutes.

According to the report’s conclusions, “The test did not yield any information as to whether variables from the construction or conditions that were tested, such as sealants or gaskets that could occur in a field installation of wire glass, or an edge-to-edge film installation, will affect the fire endurance performance of either the film or the glass.”

Enpro Names New Marketing Specialist
Houston-based Enpro Distribut-ing has announced the hiring of a new marketing specialist to spearhead new corporate marketing initiatives. According to the company, Chris Weinhardt was chosen from more than 500 candidates and brings experience in strategic marketing, product positioning, brand development and advertising to the job.
 
“Chris brings a tremendous amount of strategic marketing skill and experience,” said David Dickey, president of Enpro. “We are very pleased to have him join the Enpro team.”

Wienhardt relocated from Boulder, Colo., and will be responsible for designing and implementing Enpro’s strategic marketing initiatives while also acting as the company’s public relations contact.

“I’m very impressed with the corporate vision and leadership at Enpro,” said Weinhardt. “I’m excited about the direction [in which] Enpro is heading.”

New Personnel, Location for Global
Ben Ford of Global Window Films has taken on the position of North American sales and marketing manager. In his new position, Ford will focus on maintaining relationships with distributors and implementing marketing initiatives. Ford has been in the film industry since 1997, the last two and half years of which he has been with Global. Before entering the film industry he worked for more than a decade at Ford Motor Co.

At its newly relocated corporate headquarters in Miami, Global has unveiled its new “Plus Ten Free” program in which all charcoal premium films include an extra ten percent more film on each roll free of charge. According to Ford, “it’s like getting the film for another job free in every box.”

Heinze Named Southwall V.P.
Palo Alto, Calif.-based Southwall Technologies Inc. announced that Wolfgang Heinze has been promoted to vice president, worldwide operations, effective immediately. Heinze has been vice president and general manager of Southwall Europe GmbH, located in Dresden, Germany, since December 2000. Prior to that Heinze was the Dresden facility plant manager during which time he was responsible for the design and construction of Southwall’s new facility. 

Before joining Southwall Technologies, Heinze held various positions in the chemical and electronics industry in Germany, including FUBA Printed Circuits GmbH, where he was managing director of FUBA’s Lower Saxony facility. Heinze presently holds the position of president of the Feder-ation of Economy in Saxony, which is an industry group representing 38 separate companies. 

“I am very pleased to announce the promotion of Wolfgang to his new position and am delighted that he has decided to take on this very important role for the Company,” said Thomas G. Hood, Southwall president and chief executive officer.

S.B. 345 Signed By Governor; IWFA Victorious in Changes
Texas Senate Bill 345 was signed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry and will become effective September 1, 2003. The S.B. 345 ruling changes the state’s film law to a net law that combines the tint already incorporated by the vehicle manufacturer with the window tint applied after the purchase of the vehicle.

The originally authored bill proposed by Senator Ogden mandated a visible light transmission (VLT) of 35 percent, however, the VLT was lowered to 25 percent before the bill was signed into effect. Vehicles must also have a luminous reflectance of 25 percent or less and blue has been added to the list of prohibited film colors.

David Dickey, president of Enpro Distributing and Colonel Robert Suthard a state legislative and enforcement consultant for automotive window tinting issues, visited Texas Senator Jon Lindsey in his office in February, explaining the need for revision of the proposed bill. Lindsey showed little interest until Dickey measured the tint on the senator’s vehicle and told him it would be illegal to install his film after September 1, 2003, if the amendment passed.

The new law clarifies the current requirements and makes the laws easier to enforce. The successful revision efforts can be attributed directly to the IWFA’s hard work and to those members of the window film industry who inundated the committee with letters, phone calls and e-mails.

FINANCIAL
Applied Films Reveals Q3 Results
Applied Films Corp. of Longmont, Colo., has released its third-quarter financial figures. According to the company, net revenues for the quarter were $45.7 million, an increase of 48 percent compared to the $30.8 million earned during 2002’s third quarter.

Income from continuing operations also showed improvement, rising from losses of $875,000, or $0.08 per diluted common share, in the third quarter of 2002 to revenues of $569,000, or $0.05 per diluted common share.

In addition, earnings before amortization of other intangible assets (EBIA) were $1,508,000, or $0.14 per diluted common share, compared to a loss of $243,000, or $0.02 per diluted common share, for the third quarter of 2002.

Applied Film’s is most pleased with its bookings for the quarter, which totaled $66.1 million. Equipment backlog as of March 29, 2003 was $96.4 million, compared to $56 million at the end of the third fiscal quarter of 2002, an increase of 72 percent.

“We are pleased to report record bookings and a resulting book to bill ratio of 1.4, representing the third consecutive quarter of book to bill above one,” said Thomas Edman, Applied Films president and chief executive officer. “This was an outstanding quarter for us, as we experienced bookings strength in all parts of our business, and we delivered strong bottom line performance while at the same time increasing our research and development spending by 57 percent over the prior year.”

EXPANSIONS
Tredegar Expands
Richmond, Va.-based Tredegar Film Products will add a cast film extrusion line to its Pottsville, Pa., plant during the fourth quarter. According to the company, this will be the facility’s third expansion since it acquired the Exxon Chemical Films Business in 1999.

Tredegar’s Ultramaskä co-extruded masking film is used to protect surfaces during delivery, fabrication and installation. The patented, adhesive-free films provide clean release over a wide range of adhesion levels and storage conditions. Applications include electronics, optics, glass, plastic, metal and coatings.
