Tint-Off Winner Looks to the Future

Dan Shaw of Bremerton, Wash., applies film for Auto Glass Plus in Bremerton. He recently took first in the Second Annual International Tint-Off and took a few minutes to sit down with Window Film and talk about his “road to success.”
Dan Shaw
How long have you been applying window film?
Since I was 19 (about 6 years).

How did you get started in the business?
By tinting my own car. I kind of liked to do things myself and wanted to learn it. I wasn’t really looking for a job, but I was calling all around getting prices and I ended up talking to a guy who needed a tinter. I ended up going down to talk to him and he tested me a little bit, and he ended up giving me a job.

What is your favorite car to tint?
I would say a 2-door Neon, because it’s easy money.

What is your least favorite car to tint?
I tint a lot of cars, so it’s hard to pick a hard car. Probably the ones that are my least favorite are the ones that take a little extra time.

How many cars/vehicles do you think you’ve tinted?
Probably more than 5,000.

How many cars do you do a day?
If I can get a lot of them, I do up to seven or eight. But, with the way the market is, I don’t really get to do that all the time.

Do you find that weather—especially in the Seattle area—affects this?
[The business] is definitely kind of seasonal, but I think consistency is the key.

What do you think the biggest obstacle is for a growing tint shop?
I would say overhead. You can’t just do one thing—it takes other people to answer the phones and do sales, so overhead is one of the important obstacles people face.

What are your hobbies?
Riding my motorcycle, reading, working out and playing with my kids, Daniel Jr., 5, and, Owen, 3.

What obstacles—if any—did you encounter in the tint-off?
What I tried to do was keep it fun and not take it too seriously. Being able to relax is important.

Were you surprised you won?
I didn’t expect to win. I didn’t even plan on going. I planned on backing out two days before the event because there was just a lot going on here, but decided to go for the chance to get away and relax a little bit.
