Window film is a popular item among consumers, and, as such, stories about it pop up almost every day in newspapers across the world. Everybody and Their Mother

AUSTIN, TEXAS—Mothers Window Tint, the San Antonio-based franchise owned by Joe Calvey, was in the news recently. After Christmas, the local Time Warner affiliate news station in Austin featured a story about the electronic add-ons such as DVD players that were popular gifts during the 2005 holiday season and Mothers got a little extra publicity by being a company installing many of the gadgets.

“I’ve seen cars come in here with five screens in them. One in each headrest, one coming from the center. Audio is the other side of that. I’ve seen cars come in here with six sub-woofers,” Sam Holloway of Mothers was quoted as saying.

 
A New Kind of Roadside Memorial

KINGSPORT, TENN.—The words “In Loving Memory” are no longer reserved just for a tombstone. According to the Kingsport (Tennessee) Times-News, the vinyl decal rolling epitaphs are growing in popularity among all age groups. 

One Kingsport sign shop owner, Chris Thomas, was quoted as saying that he’s done more business in window memorials in one year than the previous five combined. Also interviewed for the article was local high school graduate Whitney Christian, who commissioned one of Thomas’ most recent window memorial jobs.

“Me and my friends just started doing that so it wouldn’t fade away,” she was quoted as saying, referring to the memorial she’d had applied to her car for a friend and local high school student who had died earlier in the week.

According to the Times-News article, the most common window memorial decals are requests for text, including the deceased’s name and dates of birth and death, though more intricate designs and graphics can be included.

“We can do whatever the customer wants,” Thomas said.

 
Living Like a Las Vegas Local

LAS VEGAS—We all know window film is an important accessory for cars in the sunny states, but how many members of the industry can boast that their local media is helping spread the word of the benefits of window film? Local Las Vegas news station KLASTV ran a list of the “88 Ways to Go From Newcomer to Native: A Survival Guide for New and Old Residents of Las Vegas,” on its website and first on the list is the recommendation to get vehicle windows tinted.

According to the website, “tinting your car windows is a must,” and the news source provided information on the legal limits of window film in the state of Nevada.

 
Helping Health

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA—Movie star Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Four Feathers”) certainly knows the benefits of window film, even if word is a bit slower getting to the rest of the world’s consumers. 

According to the (Sydney) Daily Telegraph, Ledger had the “ceiling-to-floor window panes and plate-glass balconies” of his Bronte abode tinted in a bid for privacy while living there with his wife, Michelle Williams, and their daughter.

Doing so, however, did not completely protect the young family from the paparazzi, who found other ways to document their lives. The Daily Telegraph reports that Ledger eventually put the house up for sale. The family has since moved to Brooklyn, N.Y.
