3M Gets Prestigious
The 3M Company of St. Paul, Minn., has introduced the Prestige Series of window films. According to the company, these films are its first clear and non-metal based films that are able to reduce heat and ultraviolet rays. With the films, the company offers a lifetime limited residential warranty and a 15-year commercial warranty.
According to 3M, the absence of metal in the films prevents the film from corroding and makes it possible for the film not to interfere with wireless and cellular signals.
“Residential and commercial property owners now have high-performance clear or lightly-tinted window film options that combine all the benefits of heavily tinted or reflective film without the inherent drawbacks of darkened rooms or shiny windows,” said Jon Hanbury, marketing manager for the 3M Building and Safety Solutions Department.
A D-I-Y Film for the Consumer
Wallpaper for Windows, a new line of decorative window treatments from Cocoa, Fla.-based EtchArt LLC, is designed to transform glass into decorative glass—with the application of the film. The film is designed as a “do-it-yourself” film (see September-October ’06 Window Film, page 22, for related story).
In addition to providing an aesthetic effect, the company says the 8-mil decorative film reduces glare, softens harsh sunlight and filters UV rays. The film comes with instructions for the homeowner to follow and, according to the company, can be applied easily within minutes.
The Name is Bond … BondKap™
FilmFastener LLC of Odessa, Fla., has launched a new product to anchor the film and glass to the window frame. According to the company, BondKap is easy to install and can be used with both commercial and residential applications. The system uses Dow Corning’s 995 silicone structural glazing sealant and requires no tape or tooling during application.
To use BondKap, the company says the applicator must measure the opening in which the system is to be installed, mark the area to be cut with the corner template and cut the BondKap. Afterward, the applicator must apply the Dow 995 and press the BondKap into position. The company says the BondKap will then center itself and any excess silicone can be cleaned up easily with a plastic razor blade and cleaner, leaving an original manufactured look with mitered corners.
From the Factory …
Kolbe, a window and door manufacturer from Wausau, Wis., has begun offering a removable protective film on its windows and doors. The film is provided as a standard feature on both the interior and exterior surfaces of Kolbe’s insulating glass units in the Heritage Series, Ultra Series and several other selected product lines. According to the company, the film remains on the glass from the time of fabrication through shipment and installation and is removed after construction is completed.
