Unreinforced mullions: (Save your time and engergy)
It is not necessary to “pry open an aluminum vertical mullion” to determine if steel reinforcement was installed as described by one industry expert in this article.
Save your time and energy by using a magnet. If the magnet is attracted to the aluminum mullion, then steel reinforcement was installed. I keep a 6″ long (expands to 36″) telescoping style magnet in my field inspection kit for this purpose. You can purchase these telecoping style magnets from any auto parts store.
Concealed Structural Fasteners:
You can also use a magnet to determine if anchor bolts were properly spaced on each side of a vertical mullion.
