Mic Patterson, widely considered a “prophet” of architectural glass, has a list of things he’d like to see change in the U.S. glass industry.

“Take big glass,” said the director of strategic planning for Enclos this morning during the final session of Glass Expo West™ ’15. “We shouldn’t have to go all the way to Europe to get it.”
The Glass Expo West trade show remains open until 2 p.m. PDT at the Hotel Irvine Jamboree in Irvine, Calif.
“Lots of industries have their superstars,” said USGlass magazine publisher Debra Levy in introducing Patterson. “Architects like Mies Van Der Rohe and Philip Johnson were rock stars to the glass industry. Well, glazing expert Mic Patterson is a rock star to the architects.”
And Patterson did not disappoint.
His 75-minute presentation provided an illuminating view of the future of the glass façade, as well as a “wish-list” of things the glass industry needs to do differently.
“It made my head explode,” said one attendee, “but in a good way. It’s a presentation everyone in the glass industry—and all the architects—should see. I really learned a lot.”
Patterson followed an intensive two-hour workshop on Search Engine Optimization, provided by Brian Offenberger, which included scores of questions.
The educational sessions capped off a jam-packed two days of information, as Thursday’s educational slate touched on everything from economics to legal matters. (Read more about it here.)
“I haven’t been to one of these in about 20 years,” said one attendee, identified only as “Don,” from a local mirror shop. “The quality of the education here has been outstanding. It’s been incredibly helpful on both a theoretical and practical level.”
The trade show, too, garnered high marks.
“This has just been a great show,” said Barry Wood of Wood’s Powr-Grip. “Within the first three hours, we knew it was an outstanding event.”
Added Mark Haeck of Mainstreet Computers, “I am really, really pleased. It is great to see all the people turn out for this event.”
Levy said organizers were “very pleased with the newly reconstituted event.” She concludes, “I have been part of many of the Glass Expo West shows in the past, and it’s been great to see a mix of California shops with ones from as far away as Massachusetts and Georgia, along with Mexico and Canada.”
