ISO Releases Trio of Glass in Building Standards

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently published three more standards under its Glass in Building technical committee. Two are in the “basic soda lime silicate glass products” category, while the other is under “heat soaked tempered soda lime silicate safety glass.”

Glass in Building – Basic Soda Lime Silicate Glass Products – Part 2: Float Glass

ISO 16293-2:2017 specifies dimensional and minimum quality requirements—in respect of optical and visual faults—for float glass for use in building, according to the standard’s scope. It applies to float glass supplied in stock sizes and final cut sizes.

Glass in Building – Basic Soda Lime Silicate Glass Products – Part 3: Polished Wired Glass

ISO 16293-3:2017 specifies dimensional and minimum quality requirements—respecting optical, visual and wire faults—for polished wired glass used in buildings. According to its scope, the standard applies only to polished wired glass supplied in rectangular panes, in-stock sizes and final-cut sizes.

Glass in Building – Heat Soaked Tempered Soda Lime Silicate Safety Glass

ISO 20657:2017 specifies product definitions, product characteristics, i.e. tolerances, flatness, edgework, etc., fracture characteristics, including fragmentation, and the physical and mechanical characteristics of flat heat soaked tempered soda lime silicate safety glass for use in buildings, according to its scope. The standard does not cover curved (bent) glass.

The Glass in Building subcommittees have more standards under development, according to the latest information listed in ISO’s catalogue. They are:

  • Electrochromic glazings — Accelerated ageing test and requirements;
  • Vacuum glass — Part 1: Basic specification of products and evaluation methods for thermal and sound insulation performance;
  • Vacuum glass — Part 2: Mechanical behavior;
  • Determination of light transmittance, solar direct transmittance, total solar energy transmittance, ultraviolet transmittance and related glazing factors;
  • Explosion-resistant security glazing — Test and classification for arena air-blast loading;
  • Explosion-resistant security glazing — Test and classification by shock-tube loading;
  • Bullet-resistant security glazing — Test and classification;
  • Forced-entry security glazing — Part 2: Test and classification by repetitive impact of a hammer and axe at room temperature;
  • Forced-entry security glazing — Part 3: Test and classification by manual attack;
  • Forced-entry security glazing — Part 4: Test and classification by pendulum impact under thermally and fire stressed conditions; and
  • Determination of emissivity.
