The latest jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests employment in the glass and glazing industry continues to expand.
The nonresidential specialty trade contractors category, which include glaziers, ironworkers and other building exterior contractors, saw a 0.3-percent dip in construction from February to March. However, that segment has increased employment by 3.1 percent from the same time last year.
Residential specialty trades decreased employment by 0.5 percent on a monthly basis, but added jobs at a 4.2-percent rate year over year.
The construction industry as a whole saw a month-over-month decrease in March, which can be partly attributed to weather, but it has increased employment by 3.3 percent over the last 12 months. The industry’s unemployment rate stands at 7.4 percent, down a full percentage point from the same time last year.
Hourly earnings in construction are up nearly 3 percent from March 2017.
Employment in the nonmetallic mineral products manufacturing category, which includes glass and glass product manufacturing, increased 0.4 percent for the month and 2.3 percent for the year.
The fabricated metal products manufacturing category, which includes architectural and structural metals manufacturing, also increased employment from February 2018 (0.6 percent) and March 2017 (4.1 percent).
