A Look at Trends on the Glass Expo West™ Show Floor

Glass Expo West has given exhibitors a chance to show their latest products and interact with customers in the Western region. Several trends stand out on the show floor, including acoustical glass products, aluminum windows and the influence of bird friendly glass on other segments of the industry.

Kuraray market manager Mark Jacobson said that he’s seen an increased demand for his company’s Trosifol SC interlayer for sound control. Part of the drive behind this trend are the noise codes in New York. He’s seeing demand in the hospitality sector, hospitals, airports and high-density downtown office buildings.

Crystal Window & Door Systems, which has operations in Riverside, Calif., is growing its commercial line. Sales manager Bill Taylor explained that the company is launching a new aluminum line for the commercial market to meet the demand for that aesthetic. Aluminum can also be used for larger applications compared to vinyl. However, Crystal’s vinyl product is also used in the commercial market due to its energy efficiency.

Crystal Window & Door Systems is beginning to increase its focus on the commercial market and plans to introduce an aluminum line.

Energy efficiency is a trend EDTM is also seeing in California. Vice president Mark Imbrock said the California market has a heavy demand for energy-based profilers which measure UV light, visible light, infrared light and solar heat gain coefficient. He explained that many sales reps in the region use the profiler to show the performance capabilities of energy efficient glass. It can also be used to measure the existing glass in retrofit projects for modeling purposes.

EDTM’s Window Energy Profiler identifies UV, visible and infrared light as well as solar heat gain coefficient, which is popular in California where energy efficiency is important.

EDTM recently made a Bird1st detector for Guardian Glass so that fabricators and installers can make sure that the bird-friendly coating is on the correct surface. If the coating is not on the correct surface then it won’t be as effective for bird deterrence.

At the Glaston booth the company is focusing on its ProL full convection laminating oven. Regional sales manager Matt Goebel said the demand for this product is driven in part by the need for companies to upgrade their laminating ovens. The ProL also offers improved efficiencies and power consumption, which is important in the California market.
