Award-Winning American Students Attend GIMAV Open House

The week-long visits of the Italian Technology Awards winners expanded the educational horizons of North American students through a cross-training of skill-sets and knowledge transfer with a select group of Italian machinery manufacturers. The international program was sponsored by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) as part of the “Machines Italia” special project.

For the second consecutive year, the Association of Italian Manufacturers of Machinery, Plants, Special Products and Accessories for glass processing (GIMAV) contributed to the program by hosting a delegation of students to introduce them to the world of Italian industrial machinery for flat and hollow glass processing.

The young students—from renowned universities in the U.S.—spent a week in northern Italy, during which time they attended an intensive training course at the Carlo Cattaneo University in Castellanza dedicated to innovations and best practices in ma-chine production. Divided into groups based on their fields of specialization, the students also visited some Italian machine manufacturers, including three GIMAV member companies: Bavelloni Spa, Elettromeccanica Bovone Srl and Ocmi OTG Spa.

“During the visit at the GIMAV companies, the students had the opportunity to approach the world of glass machinery production, both for flat and hollow glass sector. In each company, the people in charge explained the process behind the making of the machinery and the developing of the high-level technology through the years,” says Laura Biason, director of GIMAV.

The students were chosen based on their studies, their high level of interest in the glass sector and papers they wrote for the application process.

“The Italian Technology Awards are an amazing opportunity for all the stakeholders: the young students, the companies involved and us, as institutional representatives,” says Biason.
