President Joe Biden is scheduled to deliver remarks on his plan to stop the delta variant and boost COVID-19 vaccinations among federal employees, according to the White House.
Major news outlets have reported that Biden is set to sign an executive order mandating federal government workers, contractors and employees of contractors who do business with the federal government to receive vaccinations against the coronavirus.
The news comes as the U.S. is experiencing increasing cases of the coronavirus Delta variant. Reports also show that a new variant, Mu, has started to develop.
Biden is scheduled to address the nation at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 9.
“We fully support efforts to get as many Americans vaccinated and are taking a range of steps to do just that, including producing our own vaccine awareness PSAs to encourage construction workers to get vaccinated,” says Brian Turmail, vice president of public affairs and strategic initiatives for AGC of America.
“However, the administration needs to appreciate that the short-term impact of these mandates is that the construction industry will have an even harder time finding workers who are both qualified and vaccinated to perform these projects. As long as the administration is willing to be flexible on the timeframes and associated costs that will come with this new mandate, then we are on board.”
According to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal workforce is composed of an estimated 2.1 million civilian workers, as of June 2021.
Prior to Biden’s address, White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, addressed reporters at a press briefing stating, “There will be limited exceptions for legally recognized reasons such as disability or religious objections… we expect federal employees will have about 75 days to be fully vaccinated, that gives people more than enough time, in our view, to start and complete their vaccination series. If a federal worker fails to comply, they will go through the standard HR process, which includes counseling and face progressive disciplinary action. Each agency’s going to work with employees to make sure they understand the benefits of vaccination, and how the vaccines are free, easy and widely accessible, but it will start to be applied once the executive order is signed.”
