NSG Group Plans to Invest in Solar Glass Production Line in Malaysia

NSG Group, a supplier of glass and glazing systems headquartered in Tokyo, announced that it plans to invest in additional production capacity of transparent conductive oxide (TCO) coated glass in Malaysia. The company announced that the move will support the growing solar market.

The investment will also support the expansion strategy of First Solar Inc., a manufacturer of thin-film solar panels headquartered in Tempe, Ariz., which has a long-standing partnership with NSG Group. Along with its existing facilities in Vietnam and Malaysia, First Solar is constructing a new manufacturing plant in India, which is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2023.

The investment plan calls for a float line at the Johor Bahru factory of Malaysian Sheet Glass SDN BHD, a member of NSG Group. Additionally, NSG Group aims to install online coating capabilities and will begin to ship TCO glass for solar panel manufacture after the facility is operable. NSG Group expects that supply from the converted line will begin during the fourth quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2024.

This follows the news that NSG Group started operation on its second float line for solar glass in Vietnam in January 2020, along with opening a new plant in Luckey, Ohio. Both lines produce glass exclusively supplied to First Solar.
