Back to Show Floor: A Look at More from GlassBuild America

For many of the exhibitors and attendees taking part in GlassBuild America 2022 this year, the event marked a return to normalcy. The show took place Oct. 18-20 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and provided an opportunity for the glass, glazing and fenestration industry to gather and discuss new products, trends and much more.

Mark Haeck, vice president of business development for Mainstreet, said the show was a great event for his company.

“We had lots of visitors to our booth and will be doing a lot of follow-ups as well,” he says. “Our team was kept busy.  A nice side note, there were no references to Covid and glass shop owners and representatives seemed to be happy to be out engaging again with vendors.”

During the show, Mainstreet focused on its point-of-sale software for flat glass called Glas-Avenue. The software offers dimensional and itemized pricing for consistency, and helps employees be more efficient, and provides users with a more professional presentation to manage profitability.

Montreal-based Vicone, which produces custom rubber parts such as gaskets and seals, was excited to have its newest team member at the show. Mark Walsh joined the company as business development manager, architectural market for North America. He has over 20 years of experience in technical sales and business development within the OEM and manufacturing environments and is now working with the company’s existing architectural market customer base as well as developing the commercial glazing seals and gaskets segment in North America.

Also from Canada, Tony Bartorillo of Gutmann North America was highlighting a wood curtainwall system whose appeal outside of the residential market has come as a bit of a surprise.

“It’s even being used in some commercial applications, but residentially as well,” he says. “It’s a little unique because there’s not a lot of domestic manufacturers that do the wood systems. At the high-end residential market segment, I’m talking $5-$10 million single-family homes, there is a trend now of using a feature curtainwall in personal residences.”

Bartorillo says these residences have ceilings as high as 18 feet and homeowners want the views that can accompany ceilings of that height.

“But they don’t want to see aluminum because it’s a private residence,” he says. “So when you go with the wood system, you have the warmth of wood on the interior and the performance and structural integrity of aluminum on the exterior.”

Another new product at the show was Novagard’s “Qwik-Set” portable adhesive and glazing sealant dubbed NovaFlex, a product with a 2 to 1 mixed ratio by volume. Julio Atenco-Sanchez of Ohio’s Novagard says the sealant allows for fast curing capabilities to the tune of 30 PSI in 20 minutes.

“That gives you faster processing on glazing units,” he says. “It speeds up your process if you don’t have to do any staging, and your quality checks are going to be a lot faster because you can check adhesion in a couple hours instead of waiting days. It speeds up the manufacturing process, for sure.”

The portable product comes in cartridge form and fits with pneumatic or battery-operated guns, which also means users can perform repairs in the field.

“You can just use this product at the manufacturing site to glaze your units, but also you can use the same product to do on-field repairs,” he says.
