DOE Encourages Low-Carbon Hydrogen Hub Proposal in Great Lakes Region

To address decarbonization in the glass, steel and aviation industries, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has encouraged the Great Lakes Clean Hydrogen coalition (GLCH) to develop and submit an application for a full hydrogen hub.

GLCH is led by the Glass Manufacturing Industry Council, Linde, Energy Harbor, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., GE Aerospace and the University of Toledo.

The coalition’s application centers around developing low-carbon hydrogen via electrolysis at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio. Coalition officials explain that the facility will distribute hydrogen across the Great Lakes region by pipeline and road transportation.

The approach will supplement hydrogen from nuclear power, as needed, with clean hydrogen produced through solar energy projects under development in the region. GLCH is working with Ohio and Michigan, technology suppliers, hydrogen consumers, state and regional academic institutions, national laboratories and non-profit organizations to provide clean energy to serve Ohio, Michigan and portions of Pennsylvania and Indiana.

Total project investment is expected to exceed $2 billion. The coalition says that 50% will be requested from federal infrastructure funding managed by the DOE’s regional clean hydrogen hub initiative.

GLCH intends to grow to serve additional companies in the Great Lakes region interested in decarbonizing their products, such as manufacturing facilities and power generation plants.
